The Miami Hurricanes are 7-0, and everything is humming. But former New England Patriots star Asante Samuel, who spent years playing under Bill Belichick, thinks the Hurricanes should be careful what they wish for as they head into a showdown with the North Carolina Tar Heels, especially after the secret development in the Tar Heels’ HC’s personal life.

“UM [University of Miami] is about to be in trouble today. We are about to get the best version of Belichick since he broke up with his girlfriend. Coach always talked about distractions. Good morning,” Samuel posted on X.
Samuel’s comment was ironic: he suggested that the breakup would eliminate the distraction Belichick had long warned against. His post came after the split became public through an October 30 TMZ report. It said Belichick and his 25-year-old girlfriend, Jordon Hudson, quietly broke up late last year. The two kept their split a secret for nearly 12 months, according to the report.
Samuel’s assessment carries weight because he is one of Belichick’s former players. Before joining the Tar Heels, Belichick was head coach of the Patriots from 2000 to 2023. He was known for managing the entire franchise in a style known as “The Patriots Way.”
It was the organizational philosophy engineered by Belichick that powered the Patriots to six Super Bowl championships.
Its best-known mantra, “Do Your Job,” meant that every single person, from the franchise quarterback to the practice squad kicker, had a highly specific assignment on every single play and was expected to execute it perfectly.
Secondly, Belichick also demanded total psychological insulation from the outside world to eliminate any possible team distractions. Along with that, he actively discouraged young players from living in downtown Boston to keep them away from nightlife and celebrity distractions.
Samuel was part of that setup for five seasons (2003-2007) and is very well aware of how Belichick feels about distractions. However, compared to his stint at New England, Belichick is yet to shine as the head coach of the University of North Carolina.
In his debut 2025 season, Belichick and the Tar Heels finished with a 4-8 record. Amid that, to the media and former players who lived through Belichick’s rigid “Patriots Way,” the relationship with Hudson was viewed as a distraction, the exact kind of high-profile sideshow the coach spent decades preaching against.
Former Patriots quarterback Cam Newton even observed and made a pointed remark about it in May 2025.
“You can’t name me three players on North Carolina’s roster right now besides Jordon Hudson,” Newton said in May 2025.
Following reports of the split, Samuel’s quip suggests a sharper Belichick as he tries to lift the Tar Heels, now 4-3, starting with Saturday’s game against Miami.
