Cheeseheads? No, it was Marshawn Lynch who was the biggest Green Bay Packers fan. Had it been up to him, he would have gone Cheese mode in Green Bay a long time ago. There was a time when he wanted to leave Buffalo and join the Packers so desperately that he kept hounding the latter players to put in a word for him. For instance, back in 2016, former Packers tight end Jermichael Finley, stated, “Lynch hit us on the shoulder and said ‘Tell Ted Thompson to come get me.”

But things didn’t really go his way. Mike McCarthy was the Packers’ head coach back then, and it wasn’t easy to get into the team. Ask Lynch. He tried his very best to get in, but all attempts failed.

During the January 9 episode of Get Got Pod With Marshawn Lynch & Mike Robinson, former Packers safety Charles Woodson forced the RB to reveal his story. Marshawn Lynch was playing for the Buffalo Bills at the time but wanted out. The Packers were one of his most preferred destinations and he was so eager to leave the Bills that he would have jumped on the Packers’ plane back to Wisconsin. He revealed:

“Ya’ll [Green Bay] came to play us, week 4 in Buffalo. It was either week four or it was the game before the deadline of the trade situation. So ya’ll came to play us, I come over at the beginning of the game, go talk to, cause ya’ll had Desmond Bishop. So I come, talk to Des and Aaron, ‘Hey man, just tell them to make the trade. So that way I can just leave from Buffalo and fly back.’…”

This took place during the 2010 NFL season. But Bishop said, “I gotta tell you something, this game right here, it’s an audition. […] So I’m like, ‘Hell, yeah!'” Later, Rodgers also repeated the same to him.

It motivated him to perform at his peak level. Lynch had 17 rushes for 64 yards but failed to score a touchdown. The Packers routed them 34-7 and went on to win the Super Bowl. To date, that remains the only trophy for the head coach Mike McCarthy.

Lynch continued, “I go and talk to Aaron after the game… He like, ‘Man, I’ll talk to him’. So we going through the tunnel, I go run and catch up with Mike McCarthy like, ‘Hey, what’s up? Am I going to get on the plane with y’all to go back?'” But it seems like McCarthy was having none of it. Just three weeks after the Bills-Packers game, Lynch got traded. Not to the Packers but to the Seahawks. There he won the Super Bowl XLVIII.

What’s your perspective on:

Did Mike McCarthy's reluctance to trade for Marshawn Lynch cost him more Super Bowl rings?

Have an interesting take?

While Lynch left the league after the 2019 season, the head coach is still here. He had a fairly successful stint with the Cowboys but is now in search of a new destination.

Mike McCarthy parts ways with the Dallas Cowboys…

I have great respect for Mike, and he has led the team through some very unique and challenging times during his tenure,” wrote Jerry Jones in his official statement, thanking the head coach for his services. Overall, he had a 49-35 record for the franchise,  including 7-10 this season.

He took them to playoffs thrice, but couldn’t advance to the Super Bowl even once.

“Prior to reaching the point of contract negotiations, though, it became mutually clear that it would be better for each of us to head in a different direction,” Jones added. “I thank Mike and wish him, his wife Jessica and their family the best. They have been a wonderful part of our community here.”

It might not be too long before Mike McCarthy finds his next team. The Bears are reported to be very keen now that he is available. They first fired Matt Eberflus and later Thomas Brown. While other names like Lions OC Ben Johnson and DC Aaron Glenn are also in contention, McCarthy has experience on his side.

In fact, Jerry Jones also spoke to Deion Sanders (Colorado Buffaloes). Though he found the opportunity intriguing, ‘Coach Prime’ may not be ready to leave Boulder just yet.
