The Zohar family, which includes his father, mother, maternal grandfather and two sisters, were brutally attacked in their home in Kibbutz Nahal Oz, near the Gaza border. Ariel, who was out jogging at the time, was the sole survivor of this horrific incident. He managed to find shelter at a nearby house and escaped unharmed.
An estimated 1,000 mourners were present at the funeral of the Zohar family. The funeral service was repeatedly interrupted by air-raid sirens and incoming rocket fire from Gaza. Amidst the grief and chaos, Ariel’s aunt Sivan made a touching statement. She shared that she would raise Ariel, and they intended to celebrate his bar mitzvah as planned in a month. “We will continue to celebrate life, and we won’t let anyone destroy us,” Sivan said.
