Former Miami star Richie Incognito was accused of harassing offensive lineman Jonathan Martin when they were with the Miami Dolphins. But the truth has come differently. In a recent tweet where Incognito’s so-called bullying scandal came up on the desk, the former football guard clarified with a twist. Recalling and clarifying the involvement of Martin’s mom in the controversy, Richie Incognito wrote on X, “He couldn’t cut it in the NFL so he quit and his mom blamed me. Legacy media pushed this narrative long and far. Too bad it was all a lie! They lied to protect his money. He quit… the team had every right to claw back that money. His mom started the bullying narrative with @espn @AdamSchefter so that @MiamiDolphins wouldn’t go after his signing bonus!”

Their story dates back to a cafeteria in Miami in October 2013. Jonathan Martin made headlines when he slammed a coffee tray on the ground. It may have seemed like a small incident, but when ESPN reported that it was due to being the ‘subject of some ribbing,’ the situation escalated. The Dolphins said, “The notion of bullying is based on speculation and has not been presented to us as a concern from Jonathan or anyone else internally.” However, that didn’t stop the controversy. Reports claimed that Richie Incognito, along with teammates Mike Pouncey and John Jerry, harassed Martin that day. From then on, Richie Incognito’s life took a dark turn. ‘Bullygate,’ the term coined for the scandal, flooded the newsrooms. In the 2014 Wells report, the team suspended Incognito and he missed the entire 2014 NFL season.

To cut a long story short, do you know how Martin recalled the drama? “I never believed for a second I was being bullied,” Martin told this to ESPN on February 12, 2025, when the former O-lineman was at the TED talk. Bang on! Good news for Incognito. And you know, Martin also reflected on the report by Wells, saying, “It’s the greatest regret of my life to this day is participating in that clown show.” Well, the decade-ago drama has not only revealed the injustice to any star NFL player like Richie Incognito but also exposed Martin’s mom who wanted the bonus money on his contract when Martin retired.

Talking about his mom, Martin said, “I had a situation with my teammates that I wasn’t super happy about. But my mother had her own read on the situation.” And also added, “My mother maybe in her mind… I can’t read her mind… She thought she was doing the right thing.” This nothing but highlighted a clean chit from a decade-long drama and Martin’s further comments on the issue have released Incognito from the unnecessary drama.

Richie Incognito came up clean from ‘Bullygate’ controversy

The Miami Herald, a news outlet, covered a story on Sunday that closely examines this controversy. A Miami reporter wrote that Richie Incognito told him, “It took him 10 years to tell the truth!” Meanwhile, Martin claimed he was unaware of the bullying. Incognito reacted with both happiness and sarcasm to the update.

Incognito shared several pictures from that era with Jonathan Martin, showing them both enjoying their time together. The captions of the photos go like, “More bullying 😂,” and in another, “I think I’m getting bullied in this photo. Hard to tell 🤣.” Well, it is nothing but a depiction of how hard the world can be for an NFL player who was at his best a decade ago. However, the false controversy created by Martin and his family ruined Incognito’s career.

The past is so dark and shameful for Martin that he stated, “All the time, I’m recognized as Jonathan Martin from the Miami Dolphins. Football is just something I did. It wasn’t who I am,” on February 12. The conclusion is clear: you cannot suppress the truth; it always finds a way to surface. The sad part is that a false story has overshadowed Richie Incognito’s life for 10 years, and he can never get that time back.
