What happens at Figawi stays at Figawi! The New England Patriots’ 2016 season could have gone way differently than how it actually panned out. Though the Patriots had to pull off the greatest comeback the Super Bowl had ever witnessed to win it all that season, thanks to some shenanigans from Rob Gronkowski and Julian Edelman, they got an early setback. Well, Gronk and Edelman were already notorious for being party heads. But at some time during the 2016 offseason, they went overboard. And that apparently didn’t go down too well in Bill Belichick’s eyes, whose words still give Gronk nightmares.
Here’s the thing: Edelman and Gronkowski were on Nantucket Island to celebrate Memorial Day over the weekend. So, given the opportunity they got things went a bit out of control as you might already be familiar with Gronk’s style of partying, which is a combination of dancing and drinking. On that day, those things came back to haunt the Patriots duo. Considering they were VIPs in Fugawi, the treatment they got was also luxurious. And speaking of luxury, both Gronk and Edelman were given a golf cart so that they don’t have to walk anywhere. But who knew that golf cart would be their trouble bearer.
On the latest episode of Bussin with the Boys, Gronk recalled the incident revolving around the golf cart.“We were on a golf cart, we were in the back, Julian and I doing our thing, and the golf cart lifted up in the air, the front tyres, and we landed on the ground,” Gronk revealed. To make matters worse, the video of them tumbling down the golf cart went viral. And just like that, it landed in the purview of their head coach, Bill Belichick. Without the slightest surprise, Belichick didn’t mince his words when Gronk and Edelman reported back to training.

“3 days later, we go to whatever OTAs running routes, and Bill came up to us, get and we were sweating all over the place, get all that f—— s— out of your system. I saw you two idiots this weekend, you guys are f—— fools,” Gronk said. And the punishment Bill gave them was to get all the booze out of their bodies, which was to “keep running,” as Gronk added. Some miles under the sun were Gronk and Edelman’s punishment for causing a nuisance in Figawi. But that was not all Gronk had to say about Belichick’s coaching mindset.

Rob Gronkowski reveals Bill Belichick’s no-nonsense coaching philosophy
On the field, Gronk was probably a beast whenever he had the ball in his grasp. He knew how to break through opposition defenses and finish the play he had started. Even when he didn’t have the ball, Gronk knew how to block for his peers. So that the team benefited, but once the game was over, and it was time for celebration, Gronk’s party mode took over. It’s like Gronkowski was just born to party, score TDs, and win Super Bowls at his pace. At one time, he even said in all honesty, “Partying actually made me play better.” And he backed that statement with four Super Bowl rings, 5 Pro Bowls, and 4 All-Pro honors.

Did Gronk's partying actually fuel his success, or was Belichick the real mastermind behind it all?

However, once Belichick knew the personality Gronk built around himself. He put on a cap so that the Patriots’ TE stayed in control. In a past episode of the Dudes on Dudes podcast with Edelman, Gronk remembered the advice Belichick gave to him: “Nothing good happens past 12 o’clock at night.” Even during the recent episode of Bussin with the Boys, Gronk revealed how Belichick never tolerated any discrepancies on the field. “Coach always got you to that mindset, hung over, not feeling so good when you hit that field, that just the aura in New England, that got you to that mindset of whatever f— is in your system however you feel..You better not feel that way..when you hit that field.”
Seeing how Gronk’s career played out, his partying never caused any real damage. Gronk, thanks to Belichick, always knew how to maintain that thin line. And that obviously led him to become a legend in New England while carving out a Hall of Fame career for himself.
