The cause of death for former Fresno State wide receiver Devon Wylie, who passed away at 35, has not been publicly disclosed. A Sacramento native, Wylie was a key contributor in special teams for the Bulldogs, notably achieving 29 punt returns for 446 yards and two touchdowns in his senior year. He played in the NFL, primarily with the Kansas City Chiefs, and had a brief stint in the Canadian Football League in 2016 before retiring from football. On the eve of his demise, his family sent out a heart-warming note in his remembrance. 

Wylie’s family announces his death

On Monday, a member of the wide receiver’s family put out a post on social media to announce his demise. “We wanted to make this post so people who knew and loved Devon could learn of his passing because we don’t have the capacity to reach out to everyone in this hard time,” the post read before going on to paint a beautiful picture of his jovial spirit and loving soul. Wylie was a proficient player on the football ground but never missed the humane touch in his personality off-the-field that was marked predominantly by “making people laugh” and entertaining everyone with “his football skills, guitar jams, silly jokes and voices, back-flip tricks, fun banter Star Wars obsession chat, Halo nights and not to mention his beautiful smile.” 

Fresno State mourned the passing of their beloved athlete by posting on platform X, formerly Twitter. “Forever a Bulldog,” the post read, “Our thoughts are with the Wylie family during this difficult time.” Numerous fellow NFL players joined in with Fresno State special teams coordinator John Baxter putting up his perspective on the “tragic loss” platform X. “What a great Bulldog, brother, son and teammate. We love you Devon Wylie!” wrote the coach. Wylie while being a great individual popular amongst friends and teammates, was also an immaculate athlete on the football field.

Wylie’s contributions to NFL 

Wylie excelled as both a receiver and special teams player at Fresno State, accumulating 98 receptions for 1,327 yards and eight touchdowns. His senior season showcased his versatility, including two punt-return touchdowns, leading to a third-team All-American selection before transitioning to the professional ranks. Selected in the fourth round of the 2012 NFL Draft by the Kansas City Chiefs, Devon Wylie showcased impressive quickness and route-running skills. While he caught six passes in six games for the Chiefs, he was released before the start of the 2013 season.

After being released by the Chiefs in 2013, Wylie moved between practice squads of various teams and briefly played for the Titans, making two appearances. Between 2013 and 2015, he remained on practice squads of teams like the Seattle Seahawks, San Francisco 49ers, St. Louis Rams, Oakland Raiders, and Atlanta Falcons, however, he did not play in another NFL game. Wylie concluded his football career with the Toronto Argonauts in the Canadian Football League during the 2016 and 2017 seasons. Devon Wylie leaves back a legacy of great sportsmanship, and incredible skills, and shall always be remembered fondly by friends, family members, and the entire world of the NFL.
