The Heisman Trust has reversed its decision after navigating through the “enormous changes” in the college football landscape. Bush will finally be reinstated as a Heisman winner, acknowledging his collegiate achievements, and therefore will be allowed to be identified with the other former winners and will also be invited to the annual Heisman Trophy ceremony. The Heisman Trust’s decision to reinstate Bush was announced via a press release on Heisman.com, signaling the culmination of a thorough evaluation process. Michael Comerford, President of The Heisman Trophy Trust, expressed delight at welcoming Reggie Bush back into the Heisman family, “We are thrilled to welcome Reggie Bush back to the Heisman family in recognition of his collegiate accomplishments.”
Formerly constrained by NCAA regulations, the primary violations resulting in Reggie’s dismal fate, athletes can now harness their identity and popularity to secure endorsement deals and other opportunities for financial gain while still in college.

The Heisman Trophy revocation
In 2005, Bush dominated the Heisman Trophy race, securing 784 out of 892 first-place votes. His exceptional season included rushing for 1,740 yards on 200 attempts. However, controversy arose in 2006 when reports surfaced of Bush and his family receiving benefits exceeding $100,000 from agents while at USC. This violated NCAA rules and led to severe penalties for USC’s football program. Bush was declared ineligible from 2004 onwards, and USC disassociated from him, resulting in the Heisman Trust revoking his award for the first time in history. This hiatus concluded in 2020 when USC formally welcomed Bush back into its community.

In the subsequent years, Bush expressed his desire to reclaim his Heisman Trophy and have his “records should be reinstated” by the NCAA. Despite efforts to engage with both the NCAA and the Heisman Trust, no progress was made initially. Now, the Heisman Trust has agreed to return Bush’s original trophy and provide a replica to USC. Additionally, Bush will be extended invitations to participate in all Heisman events, commencing from the 2024 season.
