Apple TV recently released the 10th episode of their newly launched mini-series titled, The Dynasty: New England Patriots. The series covers the two-decade-long period of the New England Patriots as the dominant force in the NFL, backed up by Tom Brady’s spectacular run as their QB. During this run, they recorded eleven AFC titles and six Super Bowl victories, matching Pittsburgh Steelers at the top.

The finale is titled End Game and covers the last chapter of their historic run as their mighty empire crumbled. However, an interesting thing happened during the last run of the Patriots featuring Tom Brady, the rise of a QB who would fill Brady’s shoes as the greatest in the NFL. The final episode starts at the crossroads as Tom Brady faces Patrick Mahomes at Arrowhead Stadium, as fans witness a passing of the torch moment.

The match in context is from the AFC Championship 2019 final between the New England Patriots and the Kansas City Chiefs. On one side was the successful combination of Bill Belichick and Tom Brady with six Super Bowls but below-par form, and on the other side was the pair of Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes, young but a team on song.

The odds were heavily against the Patriots going into an unforgettable match. Not only were they playing at the home of the Chiefs, but their performance was sub-par throughout the season. On top of it, Mahomes was the MVP of the season. But Brady managed to pull off a victory with the ball to the Super Bowl.

Tied at 31 each, the match went into overtime as the Patriots were on the offense. On a 2nd & 9, Brady threw the ball as Edelman catches it. The duo did it again on a 3rd & 10 before the final touchdown for a win. Though the Patriots eked out a marginal victory on the day, little did they know that it was the final nail in their coffin. Since then, both sides have witnessed contrasting fortunes.

A twist of fate for Tom Brady and Patrick Mahomes

The Patriots parted ways with Brady as they struggled to keep the duo of Belichick-Brady intact. While Brady had another phenomenal run with his new outfit, Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2020-21, the Patriots struggled to even top the AFC East division let alone feature in the AFC Championship game.

On the other hand, Kansas City Chiefs have reached the AFC Championship finals every season since 2019, winning three Super Bowls and losing one. They are also on the verge of creating history if they win the 2024-25 season. Perhaps the ball Brady passed to Edelman on the night of 20th January 2019 was actually the passing of the torch moment, from the Patriots to the Chiefs, from Tom Brady to Patrick Mahomes.
