Tom Brady has officially dropped his Week 1 NFL power rankings, and yes, it is already sparking debate. The seven-time Super Bowl champion didn’t hold back as he placed three teams with Week 1 losses, i.e., Chiefs, Ravens, and Lions, into his top 10. In lieu of this, NFL on FOX kicked off its Instagram video with a bold caption: “🚨 @tombrady’s Week 1 Power Rankings🚨 Did your team make it in his Top 10? 🏈.” Not just this, he followed it up in the comments with a playful jab at agreement-seekers: “Everyone is in agreement right? Everyone nod your head in agreement please.” Asking for a thumbs up? But we all know that the GOAT is confident in his evaluations, whether fans agree or not.
Brady went rapid-fire through the rankings, as he started with the Lions at No. 10, Broncos at No. 9, Buccaneers at No. 8, Chiefs at No. 7, and Chargers at No. 6. And he has a reason to pursue the rankings. Placing the Chargers above the Chiefs, he said, “I gotta go head-to-head. LA’s got the edge.” Even in loss, Brady has an understanding that the Chiefs are close to the top five, as he noted their overall strength and potential. Week 1 results, he suggested, just give us a slice of what’s going to happen next.

Moving into the top five, Brady’s list establishes that he respects potential and consistency more than just the scoreboard. Placing Ravens at No. 5, he showed a genuine appreciation for their explosive plays despite a fourth-quarter collapse. Brady remarked, “That fourth quarter was something I’ve seen a few too many times from Baltimore. Still, a team that can make explosive plays in the air and on the ground is going to find a way to make my top five.” Going forth, he placed the Commanders, Packers, and Bills in the next three spots (backward counting), as he highlighted Micah Parsons’ impact on Green Bay and the Bills’ comeback mentality. Brady has a special appreciation for this mindset that can carry a team from January to February.

Naturally, the Eagles claim the top spot. It is in their championship DNA that is undeniable, allowing them to balance offense and defense, with a calm QB play. Brady remarked, “Combine that with a crazy offense that plays its best in the biggest moments and a QB that’s very calm under pressure. That combo is going to take you a long way.” With the Chiefs-Eagles rematch looming in Week 2, Brady’s rankings have indeed set the tone for a showdown that could reshuffle his list. But he has drawn immense attention for the placement of the three losing teams in the top 10.
Normally, a loss would mean a drop in the rankings, but Brady has taken a different route. Brady explained his thinking plainly: “In order to be the champs, you’ve got to beat the champs, and no one has done that yet,” which also explains why Philadelphia sits at No. 1 despite early drama. Looking at the Week 1 stats helps make sense of his choices. The Chiefs lost to the Chargers but still managed 347 total yards, with Mahomes throwing for 258 yards and 1 TD. The offense has talent, but its WR play is showing inconsistency.
Tom Brady bets on potential
Not just this, Baltimore fell 41-40 to the Bills despite 432 total yards and record-setting ground production, with Lamar Jackson rushing 70 yards. The Lions, meanwhile, struggled against Green Bay, but their defense allowed only 246 yards, and their offensive line issues, allowing 4 sacks, were a big factor. Taken together, these stats show why Brady sees promise in all three despite the losses.

Of course, not everyone is convinced. Critics argue rankings should reflect actual performance, not potential on paper. Peter King and ESPN historically drop losing teams after Week 1. Some commentators worry Brady’s approach sends the wrong message, as he is favoring established rosters over breakout performances.
