When he first joined the NFL as the 14th overall pick by the Broncos in 1974, most people did not know who he was. Fellow teammate Tom Jackson, who would later become part of the Orange Crush defense, his roommate, and lifelong friend has hilarious memories about his first entrance. He recalled his arrival with a laugh, “We were like, ‘Who is this guy?’” But Gradisher made an immediate impact once he hit the field. And now, fast forward to 2024, he’s an official Pro Football Hall of Famer.

In all the 10 years of his NFL career, Randy Gradisher played with the Broncos. He first gained major recognition as a top tackler for the Orange Crush defense in 1977 when they won their first playoff appearance. The 72-year-old is one of the honored players in the Broncos Ring of Fame at Empower Field at Mile High.

Randy Gradishar is the only player from the Orange Crush defense to receive a gold jacket and be enshrined. Feeling humbled and honored with his induction, Gradisher said, “I don’t know that there are words to describe it, but it’s one heck of an honor to be able to represent the other guys on the Orange Crush defense, the Broncos organization… and the whole team and whole club. [It] was amazing.” This legend deserves more hype for his achievements and influence from football fans.

Randy Gradishar’s long wait comes to an end

In the past, there wasn’t much social media to hype players even though they played at a pro level like Randy Gradishar. According to Broncos superfan Ron Katz, the former defensive player had always been aware of his performance: “I know the level of my play, and my contributions are that level, but I can’t control what I can’t control.” But despite the lack of recognition over the past years, he’s getting what he deserves 35 years after being eligible for selection.

After announcing his selection in February, his wife Beth cried with joy. He then found a new wave of stardom as people from all corners suddenly approached him. He said of the experience, “In a word, it has been overwhelming, but in a fantastic way. There has been an outpouring of congratulations, applause, interviews and appearance requests as I have never experienced from the Warren area, Ohio State, Broncos Country and across the country.” We wish hearty congratulations to the former NFL Defensive Player of the Year, who deserves all the attention he’s receiving now!
