The April 2008 issue of US Vogue featured LeBron James, making history alongside Gisele Bündchen. He became the first black man to be on the Vogue cover. Annie Leibovitz photographed the 6-foot-9 NBA superstar and the 5-foot-11 Brazilian beauty for the annual Shape Issue. However, it faced severe allegations, and observers saw the image as a classic King Kong poster.
Vogue spokesperson Patrick O’Connell said the magazine “sought to celebrate two superstars at the top of their game,” for the annual edition dedicated to size and form. He also added, “We think LeBron James and Gisele Bündchen look beautiful together and we are honored to have them on the cover.”
