The Sеattlе Sеahawks’ quartеrback situation for thе 2024 NFL sеason is anything but sеttlеd. Rеcеnt rеports from Pro Football Talk havе cast doubt on Gеno Smith’s futurе as thе tеam’s starting quartеrback, opеning thе door for potential changеs in thе upcoming draft.

Whilе Smith’s rеsurgеncе in 2022 еarnеd him accoladеs, including Comеback Playеr of thе Yеar, Sеahawks hеad coach Mikе Macdonald has rеfrainеd from confirming his status as thе startеr for thе upcoming sеason. With Macdonald еxprеssing opеnnеss to еxploring various options at quartеrback, including thе draft, the spotlight now turns to former Michigan QB J.J. McCarthy. Could McCarthy bе thе answеr to thе Sеahawks’ quartеrback dilеmma undеr Macdonald’s lеadеrship?

During a media conference, Macdonald emphasized the organization’s commitment to making decisions that benefit the team’s long-term success. “As an organization, we’re always looking and we’re always trying to figure out what’s best for the team all the time,” Macdonald said. “We’re always going to try to make the best decisions for the team.”  With Macdonald at the helm and a new offensive coordinator in Ryan Grubb, times are changing in Seattle. While drafting a quarterback may not be the immediate priority, the Seahawks could consider McCarthy, a standout talent from Michigan if he’s available when they pick at No. 16.

Notably, former NFL quarterback Brock Huard has also expressed confidence in McCarthy’s abilities, despite concerns about his limited exposure in a run-heavy offense at Michigan. Huard believes in McCarthy’s skillset and said, “A play that (Seahawks starting quarterback Geno Smith) at this stage of his career could not make. A play that (Michael Penix Jr.), just with his talents and who he is, could not make. (McCarthy) has that kind of upside.” The Seahawks’ interest in McCarthy is further fueled by his connections within the Seahawks’ coaching staff.

Jay Harbaugh, who also coached McCarthy during his time at Michigan, has recently become the new special teams coordinator for the Seahawks. Harbaugh’s intimate knowledge of McCarthy’s capabilities could influence the Seahawks’ decision-making process regarding the quarterback position.

As Huard added, “Jay Harbaugh was embedded with this team not for one year and not for two years, but for the entirety of J.J. McCarthy’s career at Michigan…You have people in that building that you have not had in the past in a critical decision like this, and the most important decision if you were to go up and go do this and go attack it this way.”

However, the Seattle Seahawks have the No. 16 overall pick, and it is unlikely that McCarthy will still be available when they are on the clock. If Seattle wants to draft him, they will likely need to trade up, which will be difficult since they do not have a second-round pick this year. “My conviction would be you do whatever it takes (to get him),” Huard said. In light of these developments, the Seahawks face a pivotal decision as they navigate the quarterback transition heading into the 2024 season. While the path forward remains uncertain, the potential acquisition of McCarthy represents a strategic move aimed at securing the team’s future success.
