The Chargers are strengthening their coaching staff by adding Chris O’Leary as the safeties coach, reports Jeremy Fowler of ESPN. O’Leary has a wealth of experience from his tenure at Notre Dame, where he coached notable NFL talents such as Kyle Hamilton, Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah, and Brandon Joseph. O’Leary was hired after Michigan’s Jay Harbaugh left for the Seahawks. Harbaugh had been considered for a coaching job with the Chargers, but his last-minute decision led the team to hire O’Leary instead.

O’Leary’s departure from the Irish is a significant loss for head coach Marcus Freeman, as he guided his safeties to exceptional performances. For instance, Xavier Watts won the Bronko Nagurski Trophy for leading the NCAA in interceptions under O’Leary’s guidance. O’Leary’s coaching expertise extends to seven bowl games, including the College Football Playoff in 2020. He has previously worked closely with standout safeties like Xavier Watts and Kyle Hamilton, demonstrating his ability to develop top-tier defensive talent. Chris O’Leary began his coaching journey in 2015 when he joined the Georgia State football program as a graduate assistant.
