Jim Harbaugh is predicted to modify the LA Chargers to his liking to make it more like the dominant Michigan Wolverines. The former HC for the Wolverines hung up his cape and left college football to pursue his dreams of winning a Super Bowl in the NFL. But now that he’s on a new adventure, he sure is trying to bring Michigan along with him. Case in point: Jesse Minter and Ben Herbert. And now, all eyes are on J.J. McCarthy.

Justin Herbert will stay where he is for the foreseeable future

Jim Harbaugh and J.J. McCarthy were inseparable in the 2023 season. The song of praise by Harbaugh for McCarthy would take to the extremities, so much so that the former Wolverines HC placed him higher than Michigan-era Tom Brady, saying, “I’ve said it before, but right here, this is the greatest quarterback in University of Michigan history.”

Now that Harbaugh has the power to redefine the roster, there are speculations that the Chargers’ current quarterback Justin Herbert’s career might be in jeopardy. In a recent tweet, Kyle Yates discussed the possibility of Harbaugh trading Herbert to bring McCarthy – who announced he’d skip his senior year and enter the 2024 draft – to the team.

Yates mentioned that if Harbaugh proceeds with this plan, he could retain the draft capital to reset the roster, which would help them control the trajectory of the draft. But an ardent Chargers fan – Charlie Sinclair – was quick to deny these claims. “Kyle gets paid to talk about the NFL, everyone…🙄 I don’t understand Justin Herbert not being a scheme fit,” they wrote. Comparing this situation to Harbaugh’s time coaching Stanford, they brought up former Colts QB Andrew Luck.

“You do realize, Kyle, [that] Harbaugh and Roman once upon a time had someone named Andrew Luck as their QB? Was he not a scheme fit? “Thus, as a Chargers fan, Sinclair was right in deeming the transfer pointless and, more importantly, highlighted Herbert’s no-trade clause. The 26-year-old signed a 5-year, $262.5 million extension with the team last year, including $133.7 million in full guarantees and $193.7 million in injury guarantees. This made him the highest-paid QB in NFL history based on average annual value ($52.5 million).

Moreover, fans were also quick to respond with the fact that Harbaugh was head over heels in love with Herbert’s talent, and trading him would be the last thing he would do.

Jim Harbaugh is one of Herbert’s loudest cheerleaders

While it is true that Harbaugh has come to the NFL in hopes of adding a Super Bowl trophy to his cabinet, a lot of football fans believe it is because of his adoration for Justin Herbert. The Chargers drafted Justin Herbert as the No.6 overall pick in 2020, and he’s been with the team for 4 seasons now. Additionally, he earned Rookie of the Year and then made it to the Pro Bowl in his second season.

As such, it is apparent that he’s a talented player who fits perfectly with the Chargers. Moreover, Harbaugh has nothing but praise for the QB and has called him a “crown jewel” in the past as well. In an episode of the Pat McAfee Show, Jim Harbaugh spoke about the talent of Justin Herbert. He said, “Justin Herbert – there’s no style of football that he wouldn’t excel at. If he was just going to be a running quarterback he could be that.” He didn’t stop there, though.

Harbaugh added, Drop back, pocket passer, he’s got the potential to be the absolute best at that. He could probably play tight end and be a Pro Bowl tight end. There’s no question. He could be your punter, your kicker, and a tremendous edge rusher.” Thus, it is pretty evident that Harbaugh has a deep admiration for Herbert and wouldn’t possibly even entertain any conversations about trading him anytime soon. That being said, do you think Jim Harbaugh could potentially bring J.J. McCarthy to the Chargers in the future?
