The crown jewel of the Wolverines might be heading to the former home of Tom Brady and yet, analysts don’t seem excited about the possibility. After a tremendous Combine as well as Pro Day performance, the Michigan quarterback is ready for a grand time in the NFL, much to several critics’ dismay.

J.J. McCarthy, the quarterback for the Michigan Wolverines, was a phenomenal talent back in the 2023 season. He was one of the leading contenders for the Heisman Trophy before losing out to Jayden Daniels. Additionally, he was a driving force behind the team’s 15-0 winning streak before finally helping them win the national championship. Now that he’s projected to be a top 10 pick in the NFL and a probable favorite of the Patriots, his name is drawing in a lot of backlash.

As per a recent report, the director of scouting for the New England Patriots, Eliot Wolf, is trying to bring J.J. McCarthy to Jerod Mayo’s team and the critics aren’t too happy about it. On the latest episode of ‘NBC Sports Boston’, host Michael Holley chimed in with his thoughts on the Pats’ race to acquire McCarthy and they weren’t exactly kind words.

Holley harshly called out Wolf’s decision and said, “Elliot Wolf, what are you doing? He was a good solid college quarterback but nothing special about him and let’s give him a 10%, 15% upgrade. Let’s say Jim Harbaugh was holding him back in college and Harbaugh has never been accused of holding any body back, he makes you better. So let’s just say for some strange reason, Harbaugh was holding him back and he’s going to be better as a pro. I still don’t see JJ McCarthy as a top five quarterback and I really struggle to see him as a top 10 guy.” Thus, with the Patriots being one of the top spots for McCarthy to land in, it will be a tough pill for the analysts to swallow as the criticism for him has never been more emphasized.

While the Patriots are in the race for drafting McCarthy, the New York Giants aren’t lagging too behind as only recently, they had a private session with the Michigan QB.

From being a projected top-15 pick to a top-3 QB pick, McCarthy has come a long way. He is expected to go the Washington Commanders unless they choose to trade down. And yet, the NFL teams want to seek all the info on the golden pupil of Harbaugh, whose Combine performance stunned all. While the Pats are obviously pushing for McCarthy, the Giants’ aren’t wasting any time either.

It was recently reported that the team sent a contingent to Michigan for a private training session with McCarthy. During McCarthy’s Pro Day, GM Brandon Brown and QB coach Shea Tierney were in attendance and maybe they liked what they saw. Thus, it could be a possibiliy that McCarthy could be seen sporting dark blue colors. With only 22 days away from the NFL Draft, the tensions and the stakes have never been higher.
