Pat McAfee slams the NCAA transition rule

In a recent episode on The Pat McAfee Show, the former NFL punter voiced his opinions on the harsh NCAA transition rule, which states that programs that are transitioning from the FCS to FBS aren’t eligible for postseason games during the first two years of transition. Just like many other notable voices in the sports world, Pat McAfee remarked, “We’re not standing for this because we all think it’s dumb.

According to an update by Matt Brown, Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares threatened the NCAA with legal action if JMU is excluded from the Bowl consideration as “this injustice transcends athletics, and should not be allowed to stand.” Pat McAfee stated, “James Madison is doing something special. You don’t think these student, human-athletes don’t deserve to reap the benefits of all their hard work this year?

The 36-year-old went on to say that all the other schools are agreeing on the decision to let JMU play, except the NCAA. He challenged the NCAA, saying, “Why do we just have to uphold rules that are dumb when you’re the institution that could just change it?” And the buck doesn’t stop there. Other teams are falling victim to this rule as well!

JMU isn’t the only program affected by the NCAA transition rule

The NCAA transition rule is also affecting two other programs – Jacksonville State and Tarleton State. However, according to a Twitter update by ESPN college football insider Pete Thamel, their request to participate in the postseason games has been rejected by the NCAA.?

Both JMU and Jacksonville State are in the FBS, while Tarleton State remains ineligible for FCS postseason play since their transfer from Division 11 to the FCS four years ago. Given the present uproar, if such NCAA rules continue to prevail, it would serve as a source of discouragement for any team transitioning from the FCS to the FBS.

Every rule is there for a reason, but the question here is if the NCAA transition rule is really necessary. After all, every team deserves credit for their efforts, and it would be a selfish end on the part of the NCAA to bar JMU from the competition they’re highly qualified for.?
