Robert Griffin III was invited on ESPN’s College Football show Sound Off for their recent episode to discuss the shift in power dynamics in the NFL. The panel took Deion Sanders‘ recent statement from the Million Dollaz Worth of Game podcast as the premise of the discussion. Coach Prime gave the example of Eli Manning for his son, Shedeur Sanders, and Travis Hunter to advise college players to use their power.

Eli Manning, the older brother of NFL Legend Peyton Manning, is fondly remembered for his days with the Giants and his two Super Bowl victories. But he is also remembered for his infamous move against the Los Angeles Chargers, which has probably become the talk of the town, just weeks ahead of the draft. RG III has now taken the same example to state how the NFL will change going forward.

Griffin agreed with Coach Prime’s statement and further elaborated the scenario to the panel and the audience. He said, “What Deion Sanders is talking about is exactly what is coming down the pipeline and I think the coaches and organizations have to realize that players now know without them, the league is nothing. Imagine the NFL without Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen, and Lamar Jackson. Not as many people would watch. So, get ready.

After the introduction of the NIL deal in the NFL, players have become more powerful and conscious about their association. Hence, Griffin wants them to be more conscious about their choices, including the franchise. He takes the names of stars like Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen, and Lamar Jackson to prove the importance of players in the NFL. He even cited the examples of Marvin Harrison Jr. and Caleb Williams skipping the NFL Combine, to prove that some players are already heading towards the new era post-NIL.

Griffin’s statement on the show doesn’t come as a surprise after suggesting Caleb Williams pull a similar move on the Chicago Bears for his draft.

Eli Manning’s move in the 2004 draft sets the tone for today’s generation

RGIII posted on social media on March 18th advice for Caleb Williams. He tweeted, “Caleb Williams should pull an Eli Manning and tell the Chicago Bears I AIN’T COMING.” The reference, including Eli Manning, is from the 2004 NFL draft when Manning was drafted as the No. 1 pick by the Los Angeles Chargers, despite Manning’s initial refusal. In the end, Manning was traded to the New York Giants, where he helped them win two Super Bowls in 2007 and 2011.

Griffin wants Williams to do something similar, as he believes that the Bears are not a right fit for Williams’ talents. In 2004, the Manning family felt the same with the Chargers and it turned out to be the right choice. Cam Newton further explained this on a show by elaborating on the multiple roles Williams will play for the Bears due to their issues. Though Williams may be ready for the challenges, he still has the choice to reject the offer, even if the NFL has a draft system in place.
