Saturday’s homecoming game did not turn out the way the Alabama State Hornets would have hoped for it to go. Amidst all the fanfare and celebrations that surround a homecoming, the Hornets lost 26-12 to the Jackson State Tigers. And to make matters worse for the Hornets, a sour moment between the two head coaches seems to have attracted more attention than they’d want.

The incident mentioned here surrounds a post-game handshake between the Hornets’ coach Eddie Robinson Jr., and the Tigers’ coach Deion Sanders. When the two coaches met at the center of the field for the customary handshake, Sanders tried to reel Robinson in for a hug, which the latter, quite theatrically, refused.

It resulted in a very brief pushing bout between the two, before being separated and escorted by Alabama State troopers present at the scene.

When asked about the incident, Robinson said he felt “disrespected” by Sanders’ actions on game day.

“We did not talk in the pregame,” Robinson said. “I was out there the whole time at the 50-yard line. He walked through our whole huddle in our end zone. He came the long way around to get to his side of the field in pregame. I thought that was not classy at all. In the post-game, I’m not about to give you the [Barack] Obama bro hug. I’m gon’ shake your hand and go on. I’m going to always be respectful and respect the game.”

“I’m living on the coaches in the SWAC,” Robinson said. “He ain’t SWAC. I’m SWAC. So, he’s in the conference doing a great job. I can’t knock that, got a great team. … But you not about to come here and disrespect me, and my team and my school and then want a bro hug. Shake my hand and get the hell on. Period.

You got the W, great job. I hope he comes back next year. I pray he don’t get a Power 5 job so we can play them next year in Jackson and I pray they put us for they damn homecoming.”

Eddie Robinson Jr is a former NFL linebacker and was picked 50th overall by the Houston Oilers (now the Tennessee Titans). After 4 years at Houston, he played for 2 years with the Jacksonville Jaguars. He then moved to the Tennessee Oilers/Titans for another 4 years, and appeared in the Super Bowl XXXIV (2000), losing to the Los Angeles Rams. His last season in the NFL was with the Buffalo Bills and was hired as the head coach for his alma mater Alabama State in 2021.

Deion Sanders was something of an athletic prodigy in his heyday, having played in the NFL and the MLB. He is also the only player in history to have played both in the Super Bowl and the World Series. He had a stellar career in both leagues, and upon retiring, became an analyst for CBS. His coaching career started in 2012 with Prime Prep Academy, which he founded. And in 2020, JSU appointed him as the Tigers’ head coach.

With the Tigers now 5-0, 3-0, which matches their best season start since 1996, they will face a very weak Bethune-Cookman Wildcats (1-4) on Sunday. Sanders will expect the Tigers to run rampant with the game. The Hornets will also face a weaker team in Mississippi Valley Devils (0-6). A team that has failed to register a single win this season. Simple games for both teams to cool off their last encounter.
