Coach Prime is no stranger to nepotism allegations. With two of his sons, Shedeur Sanders and Shilo Sanders, playing in his team and the fatherly concern that he displays over his QB son, it’s easy for doubts to creep in. In the latest episode of Coach Prime Season 2, the oldest son of Deion Sanders spoke out about growing up with Coach Prime as his father. He admitted that his journey was “rocky” in contrast to everyone’s assumptions.

He stated, “Regardless of what people think, my dad ain’t giving nothing to nobody. You gotta go make a name for yourself.” Coach Prime is known for his strict discipline in his professional career. Even Sanders Jr. admits the challenge he faced working for his dad. He further elaborated, “It’s difficult working with dad because he demands the greatest. He just wants your family to be proud of you. That’s the goal at the end of the day, so that means everything.”

When Sanders left Jackson State to switch to the Buffs, his son, Shedeur, tagged along with him. “I’m bringing my own luggage with me,” Coach Prime said while introducing his son as the QB. In a discussion with Shannon Sharpe on ‘Club Shay Shay’ post his move to Colorado, Coach Prime shared his thoughts on nepotism allegations. “Not nepotism. That ain’t nepotism… You better go get the film and watch. That’s real,” he said. While HC must have presumed that season 2 is going get him into the clear, he couldn’t have been more wrong. But a more pertinent question to ask is: did Shedeur deserve the position?

Well, JSU’s Tigers won SWAC titles in both 2021 and 2022. They stayed undefeated in 2022 before a loss to North Carolina Central in the Celebration Bowl. And Shedeur Sanders was dominant that season. He completed 70.5% of his passes for 3,752 yards. He also had 40 touchdowns and six interceptions in 13 games. After joining the Buffs, he also set a record for most passing yards in a single season. The QB surpassed Sefo Liufau’s record of 3,200 yards, which was made nine years ago.

With a standout performance to back his son before his Colorado move, Deion Sanders was still able to keep his head high this season, thanks to the mettle that was Shedeur. For instance, during the Buffs’s fifth game in the season against the USC, Shedeur and Co had to dig deep to really make it a game at their home ground. They nearly turned the game around in their favour.

Shedeur gave his coach-father enough reasons to push back nepotism allegations in 2023   

While quarterback Caleb Williams dominated the majority of the game, the Buffs managed to make a comeback in the second half to outscore USC 27-14. With a total of a touchdown, four touchdown passes, an interception, and a 30-for-45 finish for 371 yards, Shedeur was unique that day.

Although a late touchdown pass from Shedeur Sanders to Jimmy Horn Jr. was too little too late, Shedeur gave Buffs fans a thrilling game to watch. Pushing back all narratives surrounding the HC favoring his quarterback son, Deion reasoned, “I’m his dad. I have an expectation for him, and I’ve been seeing this. He’s been built and reared for this his whole life. I mean, you didn’t believe, but I believe… I mean, the kid has always won, always been dominant… He’s always lifted the level of competition, and he’s always given us a chance to succeed in every level.”
