Michigan’s Pro Day is one of the most anticipated of the 2024 NFL Draft season, due to their star quarterback, J.J. McCarthy. Hundreds of NFL representatives are flocking to Ann Arbor to get a closer look at the rising prospect. While some might expect McCarthy to throw hundreds of passes to prove himself against other top QBs, this isn’t a showcase for “rubber-arming” or facing a live defense. However, his work remains a must-watch for teams like the New York Giants.
ESPN’s Matt Miller reported that J.J. McCarthy’s efficient 25-minute session only featured two clear misses. While Miller offered his own analysis of what the Giants would need to do to draft McCarthy, the real draw is the exposure. Scouts are hungry for more glimpses of McCarthy, whose draft stock has skyrocketed in recent weeks. This Pro Day performance further cements his status as a top prospect.

The more scouts see J.J. McCarthy throw, the more comfortable they become with his skillset. His arm strength and velocity were on full display in a recent video. McCarthy, who will likely be the first Michigan player drafted with his surging draft stock, showcased his talent with a smooth rollout to his left and a flip of the wrist. His laser-like 60-yard touchdown pass found its target in Michigan running back Blake Corum. “The Winged Helmet,” also posted the viral video on their X handle.

While the top three picks—the Chicago Bears, Washington Commanders, and New England Patriots—are all projected to take quarterbacks, McCarthy has been consistently linked to the New York Giants, who draft at number six. However, NFL Draft expert Matt Miller believes the Giants will need to trade up from their current spot to secure him. For now, it’s quite why the Giants are targeting McCarthy at quarterback.

GM Joe Schoen personally scouted every top quarterback prospect multiple times during the last season, and the team has formally met with each of them.
Michigan’s J.J. McCarthy, whose worth skyrocketed on draft boards, is a likely target, as UNC’s Drake Maye, considered the Giants’ ideal choice, is projected to be drafted even higher. Many scouting coaches praise McCarthy’s work ethic, leadership, and football intelligence.
