Caleb Williams is arguably the find of the NCAA season this year. After making the Heisman Trophy his own last year, he has been in tremendous form this year as well. The 21-year-old QB for the USC Trojans is already being touted to be a legendary player. With teams ready to get him onboard in the 2024 NFL drafts, his ascension to the top is only getting started.

Going by the age and experience, Williams is still in the nascent phase of his career. His career path is showing promise and will continue to grow in the coming years. Widely considered as the best NFL prospect, he might go on to topple the stardom status of QBs such as Patrick Mahomes.

In only his first season with the Trojans, Caleb’s capabilities came to the surface. He went 11 wins and three losses with his new side. Personally, it was a great season as he completed 4,537 passing yards as USC’s QB. Moreover, he completed touchdowns over 50, 52 to be precise! For any rookie player, these are outstanding stats. He finished the season off with 5 interceptions.

The jersey number 13 was awarded the prestigious honor of the Heisman Trophy for his performances. This year too he’s already covered 3,249 yards and pushing closer to 3,000. Moreover, he has already accounted for 29 touchdowns with two games remaining in the bank. Add to them the four interceptions, you get the player for ages who has arrived in the footballing world. No wonder, he has drawn comparisons with the current NFL GOAT Patrick Mahomes.

Williams following in Mahomes’ legacy

The young USC signal-caller has often drawn comparisons with Patrick Mahomes. While the Kansas QB is creating history in the NFL, Williams continues to do so in the NCAA. Mahomes is one of the innovative playmakers and makes spectacular moves thrice in a month. In comparison, Williams faces a less challenging NCAA side and still makes about 6 jaw-dropping moves every game.

The storm of hype never seems to be stopping with Caleb coming clutch with most of the games. Recently, Jordan Palmer gave his verdict on the efficient playmaker. Palmer, a distinguished EX-QB spotted Williams long back during the Elite 11 event and at once knew he was made for something exceptional. While there are several things that separate Mahomes from Williams, here’s my take on the same.

What’s Williams’s take on comparisons with legends?

While any other rookie player would’ve been enamored by the mere mentioning of a name such as Mahomes in the same sentence, Williams thinks otherwise. Time and again the QB has denied any comparisons between himself and Patrick. During an interview with Andscape, Williams showed respect to the NFL veteran but decided to stay humble. He mixed the emotions with fanboying over the NFL player.

“He is the best player in the world, he does special things. His teammates love him. The man has two [Super Bowls]. So to be compared to someone like that … it’s a sense of respect. But it’s also irrelevant, ’cause I’m Caleb. Caleb Williams here at USC. I haven’t even won a [college] national championship yet.” Replied the teenager although a bit shy and admitted that he still has a long way to go!

It just shows the temperaments and the mindset of the QB at this tender age. While there’s the surmountable pressure of comparisons, Williams has set clear-cut goals. In the day and age of fast-tracking players, Williams is on the right track with his abilities. He surely looks like an ideal future prospect with several teams looking to sign him up if he stays injury-free.

Things that are working in Caleb’s favor

The comparisons are a result of hard work, training, and an immense amount of self-belief that helps the QB to deliver match-winning performances. His biggest advantage lies in having the HC Lincoln Riley by his side. Under Riley, Caleb’s had a run of quality reps and the mammoth experience that can make him become a future legend.

Patrick Mahomes’ Clone Caleb Williams Takes USC Trojans to New Heights, Forges His Legacy

First things first, while Mahomes has already established himself in the NFL. Williams in comparison needs to get to the NFL first, to actually stand with the comparisons. Going by his standards and the benchmarks that the USC’s QB has set, there’s no denying that he’d be a great player for the generations to come!

My take on the comparisons

The storm of hype never seems to be stopping with Caleb coming clutch with most of the games. In my opinion, Williams possesses immense talent. I believe he has the arm strength, the pre-snap reads, and of course, the jaw-dropping passes that come quite close to Mahomes’ prowess. But Mahomes is a more on-the-spot thinker and comes up with innovative formations. This comes from exposure and the experience of playing good NFL sides. But, I have a gut feeling that with Caleb adding some legendary skills to his repertoire, he could go to even topple Mahomes’ legacy.
