Things have gone on a downward spiral for Caleb Williams and the USC Trojans as they succumbed to the Washington Huskies in their last game. Retired NFL veteran and USC player OJ Simpson threw light on the recent game, pointing out that it isn’t Caleb Williams’ incapabilities on the field. He even goes to the extent that legendary NFL quarterback Aaron Rodgers wouldn’t have changed the game’s outcome for the better.

Many people opine that the crushing defeat isn’t due to the lack of effort from the offensive line, but USC has a sore spot in defense. In defense of Caleb William’s impressive play despite the loss, OJ Simpson states that even Aaron Rodgers would need better protection if he was in the Heisman Trophy winner’s situation.

OJ Simpson drags Aaron Rodgers into USC loss

OJ Simpson feels that no matter how great a quarterback is, there was not much chance that they could perform better than the 21-year-old QB. Given their poor defense, he doubts that “even Aaron Rodgers would do much better” if he was in Caleb Williams’ shoes. Washington’s defense came strong in the last game, giving USC’s star QB a hard time throughout the game. While Caleb Williams managed to evade sacks in the first half, he became worn out in the second half and was sacked for a 12-yard loss. OJ Simpson goes on to say, “If we gonna put a 40-year-old Aaron Rodgers back there, we gotta give that man better protection.”

As the starting quarterback of the New York Jets, Aaron Rodgers had a torn Achilles tendon injury in his first week of the regular season against the Buffalo Bills. The recovery period for Achilles tendon recovery usually takes nine months to one year. While news surfaced earlier that the Super Bowl champion will sit out the entire season in recovery, there is a prospect that Rodgers will get back on the field with the Jets before the end of the season. So far, the Jets have fared miserably with 4-4.

USC linebacker apologizes for poor defense

For the most part of the dismal game, USC’s defense takes a big portion of the blame. Following the 52-42 heartbreaking defeat against Washington, Trojans linebacker Raesjon Davis posted an apology to fans on Twitter. The post reads, “I’m truly sorry Trojans fans. I wish we could have been better for y’all.

Retired USC safety and NFL player Su’a Cravens also voiced his opinions on USC’s defense in response to a tweet by former Heisman Trophy winner Matt Leinart, who posted that USC’s defense is “out of place all the time.” Cravens said that in all his career playing as a defense, he isn’t able to wrap his head around “some of the coverages and gap responsibilities of these players.”

Offense-wise, USC completed 515 yards, rushing for 203 yards. Caleb Williams accounted for four touchdowns, completing 77% of his passes. Head coach Lincoln Riley said, “We didn’t play very well tonight. Some of our worst ball was on some of our biggest plays of the game.” With Dan Lanning’s Oregon Ducks next in line to face USC, we hope they’re tweaking their defense for the better.
