As the 2024 NFL combine kicks off in Indianapolis on Monday, all eyes are on the Washington Commanders, who are poised for a transformative offseason. Under the leadership of owner Josh Harris, who assumed control in July, and with Adam Peters taking the reins as the new general manager alongside head coach Dan Quinn, the Commanders enter the offseason with a wealth of resources.

With the most cap space in the NFL and holding the coveted No. 2 overall pick in the upcoming draft, Washington is positioned to make significant moves to reshape their roster. While it’s uncommon for owners to attend the combine, Harris has broken the mold by not only being present in Indianapolis but also actively participating in the quarterback interview process.

At the forefront of Harris’ agenda is to put an end to the quarterback dilemma. Making his inaugural appearance at the NFL combine as the owner of the Washington Commanders, Josh Harris has been actively involved in all six interviews conducted by the team with the top quarterback prospects in this year’s draft. With Caleb Williams expected to be snagged as the No. 1 overall pick by the Chicago Bears, Washington’s focus shifts to deciding between Drake Maye and Jayden Daniels.

This decision will not only impact their immediate future but also set the tone for the franchise in the years to come. Adding to their intrigue, Washington boasts a total of nine selections in the draft, including six within the first 103 picks. With this abundance of draft capital, the Commanders have the opportunity to infuse talent across various positions and strengthen their foundation for the future.

Who should the commanders draft in 2024?

The Washington Commanders’ decision-making process is contingent on the Chicago Bears’ actions with the No. 1 pick. If the Bears opt for Ohio State’s Marvin Harrison Jr., then Caleb Williams becomes a prominent option for Washington. However, this scenario seems unlikely, and if Williams isn’t chosen first overall, another team may trade up to acquire him. In such a scenario, the Commanders are left with a choice between North Carolina’s Drake Maye and Heisman-winning QB Jayden Daniels. Both possess the potential to become franchise quarterbacks in the NFL, but Maye emerges as the preferred prospect for Washington.

Despite Daniels’ impressive stats, Maye’s fit within the Commanders’ potential spread-heavy offensive scheme is notable. While Daniels offers speed and a strong deep ball, Maye’s experience in a spread system under Chip Lindsey in 2023 aligns more closely with Washington’s offensive vision. Although Maye’s statistics in 2023 didn’t match his stellar 2022 season, he still displayed traits indicative of a top quarterback prospect. The Commanders could find success with Maye, adding to the legacy of UNC quarterbacks. However, their ultimate decision depends on one significant factor.
