Although Caleb Williams presented his least impressive individual performance of the season, the star quarterback managed to make a critical play when it counted, keeping the Trojans in the hunt for the College Football Playoff. USC’s record improved to 6-0, making them one of only three undefeated teams left in Pac-12 conference play.

No. 9 USC though undefeated so far, had really close-call wins over Arizona State and Colorado the last two weeks. Upon their return home to face Arizona on Saturday night, persisting imperfections nearly led to a costly outcome for the Trojans.

The Trojans managed to secure a two-point conversion courtesy of the reigning Heisman Trophy winner, Caleb Williams, and were able to halt Arizona running back DJ Williams on the subsequent 2-point attempt, narrowly escaping with a thrilling 43-41 triple-overtime victory over the Wildcats in a late-night showdown in Los Angeles. The culminating comeback, however, came following a rocky start to the game.

USC’s defense has not been the best since Lincoln Riley took over the program as head coach, and this game was no exception. Arizona was able to dominate 17-14 up until a four-yard run and a five-yard pass to Kyron Hudson with two seconds left in the half.

Their ultimate win and overcoming their defensive shortcomings was credited to Williams’s ability to make a difference where it actually matters the most. His brilliant play has often prompted both NFL fans and analysts to draw parallels between an already prominent Kansas City legend, and we sure know why.

“He’s magnificent:” Williams emulates Mahomes

Following his stellar performance against the Colorado Buffaloes, former Colorado coach Rick Neuheisel drew a significant comparison between Williams and Kansas City Chiefs star quarterback Patrick Mahomes on the ‘Dan Patrick Show’.”He’s magnificent,” Neuheisel said referring to Williams, adding, “sixth sense of where these guys are going to end up being and can throw them open. “

“I see Patrick Mahomes. I see a guy that just basically understands, certainly, the play called, but then loves to play the play that he creates by extension,” Neuheisel concluded.

The reigning Heisman champion, Williams entered the game to replace the struggling Spencer Rattler, who was then the Heisman favorite. Caleb almost instantly lit up the game and the fact that he deserved to be the starting quarterback sounded loud and clear. Williams soon led Oklahoma to a 5-2 record before eventually transferring to USC at the beginning of 2022, storming through the journey to becoming the best football player at the collegiate level, and a much-anticipated NFL legend in the near future.

The journey ahead for the Trojans only gets more challenging with a visit to Notre Dame, followed by a home game against No. 18 Utah. In November, they are set to host No. 7 Washington and head to Eugene to take on No. 8 Oregon. Will star boy Williams be able to live up to his MVP comeer? Or will he make a mark of his own? We shall soon find out.
