More than once, Deion Sanders has spoken about his struggles during childhood growing up with his mother, Connie Knight, in Fort Myers, FL. Things were simple back then as he grew up with his single mother after his biological father passed away when he was two. As a child, Sanders even had a sweet pet that he adored. But he eventually lost it in a way you wouldn’t have expected. And his mother has something to do with it.

Deion Sanders opens up about emotional parting with pet rabbit

Deion Sanders uploaded a throwback reel from 2018 on his Instagram on June 22 and captioned, “RIP PET RABBIT!!” In the video, Deion Sanders Jr. asked Grandma Connie what happened to the rabbit. Coach Prime’s mother became hilariously defensive, saying, “I don’t want to hear about no rabbit. Deion just lying,” as she kept rummaging around in her kitchen. Deion Sanders also chimed in the conversation and asked her where the rabbit had gone and what happened.

To understand the story behind it, Deion Sanders explained what happened when he was younger, living in Fort Myers with his mother. An emotional Coach Prime revealed he had a rabbit when he was five or six, a pet he loved dearly. “I loved that rabbit,” he said. But what happened to it? Sadly, his mother told him one day that they were having a rabbit for dinner, and it was Coach Prime’s poor little pet! It’s tough information to swallow, but this incident shattered nothing between them as Deion Sanders grew up with a noble wish for his mother.

Last month, Deion Sanders spoke about how hard his childhood was growing up with a single mother. He said, “My mom never saw me play a football, baseball, or basketball game in high school because she was working. She worked. She worked a night shift. She’s worked for me.” Seeing his mother struggling so hard, 7-year-old Deion Sanders promised his mother, saying, “I was gonna make a lot of money. She was gonna never have to work.”

Deion Sanders, a man of his word, fulfilled the promise he made to his mother, Connie Knight. When he became an NFL player, he was able to retire his mother from work, just as he had vowed. With a sense of pride and satisfaction, he shared, “My mother has not worked since 1989 when I signed the dotted line for the Atlanta Falcons. And she would never ever work another day because that was my rabbit in this steel. My mother lives with me. So every time I go home and see her. It’s my rabbit. I’m still chasing that.” This act of gratitude and support is proof of Deion Sanders’ character and his commitment to his family.
