Analyst’s skеpticism amid Michigan’s coaching changеs

In a recent episode of  Fox Sports’ The Number One College Football Show, CFB analyst RJ Young expressed skepticism about Michigan’s prospects for the upcoming season. Young admitted to giving the Wolverines “the benefit of the doubt” with the departure of key defensive staff to the pros league. “Michigan is getting the benefit of the doubt from me because, frankly, when I haven’t given them the benefit of the doubt, they have shown themselves to be more than capable of coming out 15-0, winning the Big Ten Championship, and winning a national championship,” said Young.

“However, with Sherrone Moore taking over as head coach, it is a big job for him. There’s no doubt about what he can do as a head coach, but that was with the staff and the players that Jim Harbaugh recruited to the Michigan Wolverines, and the entire defensive staff from last year is gone,” emphasized Young. While Michigan is navigating this coaching transition, another hurdle comes with the departure of several key players right after their Natty win who contributed in their last 15-0 season.

Key changes in Michigan’s player and coach roster

With the departure of the key Wolverines offense players such as RB Blake Corum, WR Roman Wilson, and QB J.J. McCarthy, the team’s offensive lineup needs to be reshaped to accommodate new talent and maximize their potential. Despite this, Michigan still ranks fifth in Young’s Pre-Spring Top 25 rankings, a testament to the program’s past success and potential for the future. However, Young believes this ranking may be “conservative” given the formidable opponents Michigan will face during the season, including Ohio State, USC, Oregon, and Texas.

Coach Moore has also reportedly bolstered his coaching staff with the additions of Wink Martindale as defensive coordinator, Greg Scruggs as defensive line coach, Brian Jean-Mary as linebackers coach and run game coordinator, and Lamar Morgan as defensive backs coach and pass game coordinator.

Moreover, the Wolverines strengthened their roster by adding former defensive back Brad Hawkins (2017-21) as a graduate student. However, it remains to be seen whether these defensive hirings can maintain the standard of the Michigan football program set by former coach Jim Harbaugh.
