Texas wide receiver Xavier Worthy stole the show at the NFL Combine on Saturday, becoming a standout with his lightning-fast 40-yard dash. He made history by setting a new record for the event, surpassing John Ross’s 2017 record. While doing well at the Combine doesn’t guarantee NFL success, Worthy’s performance turned heads.

Worthy has a track record of breaking records. Previously, he smashed the school freshman receiving yards record with 261 yards against Oklahoma. However, his latest achievement is quite massive and caught the eye of fellow prospects and NFL stars like Patrick Mahomes of the Kansas City Chiefs. It’s no wonder that this record-breaking athlete has gained numerous new fans following the recent Combine.

Xavier Glenn Worthy, the American football wide receiver, made his mark at Texas, securing all-conference honors in both 2021 and 2023. Throughout the 2023 season, the 20-year-old showcased his game-breaking talent, drawing attention for his speed. During Week 12, he hit a top speed of 22.7 mph on a punt return touchdown, the fastest among all college players that year, though it was nullified due to a penalty.

In 14 games with the Texas Longhorns last season, Worthy tallied 75 receptions for 1,014 yards and just 5 touchdowns. Standing just over 6 feet tall and weighing 165 pounds at the combine, Worthy defied expectations. At the 2024 NFL Combine, he blazed through the 40-yard dash in just 4.21 seconds, beating the event record set by Washington’s John Ross in 2017 by a hair. He even managed to shave off .04 seconds from his initial attempt of 4.25 seconds. This new record even surpassed the previous one held by Chris Johnson, who ran a 4.24 in 2008. As he crossed the finish line, the crowd at Lucas Oil Stadium erupted in cheers, and Worthy continued running in jubilation.

Xavier Worthy’s dash to glory: a record-breaking celebration

Worthy initially tied Ross’ record with a time of 4.22 seconds, but official confirmation awarded him the record by .01 seconds. Meanwhile, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes was closely watching the Combine and was sharing his excitement throughout. Other NFL stars like Tyreek Hill also celebrated Worthy’s remarkable achievement on social media.
