Texas A&M finds itself in a pivotal position after Jimbo Fisher’s departure. The search for a new head coach is underway, and several potential candidates are in line. Texas A&M will reportedly pay Jimbo Fisher a record buyout amount of just over $76 million, making it the largest payout in Texas. Fisher’s initial hiring in 2017 included a substantial 10-year, $75-million contract along with a replica NCAA Championship trophy without a specified year. Now with both Fisher and the trophy out of question, the quest for the next is in full swing.

Texas A&M’s athletic director, Ross Bjork, is aiming high in their coaching search. Oregon’s Dan Lanning, a CFP contender with SEC experience, is among the notable mentions. When inquiries about the Texas A&M job were made during his press meet on Monday, Lanning let his opinion known.

Dan Lanning shoots down coaching alternatives

“Everything I want exists right here. I’m not going anywhere. There’s zero chance that I would be coaching somewhere else,” said Lanning, who has rapidly transformed the Ducks into College Football Playoff contenders in his second year of coaching. According to him, he has “unfinished business” in Oregon, and wishes to become an “elite” in Oregon. He values the resources and support in Oregon, stating his motivation lies in winning and achieving excellence for the team and fans. Lanning recently renewed his contract and affirms his focus on-field success rather than financial considerations.

Oregon stands at an impressive 9-1 record, fairly well positioned in the College Football Playoff race as the No. 6 team. A continued winning streak and a victory over Washington in the Pac-12 Championship game could propel them into the final four on Selection Sunday. With Lanning outright denying any possibility of transfer, Texas is forced to weigh its alternative coaching candidature.

Florida State’s Mike Norvell has been linked to the coaching vacancy at Texas A&M as well. However, similar to Oregon’s Lanning is unlikely to make a move away from his present franchise, regardless of profitability. The Aggies are likely seeking a coach with stability and success, considering their resources and prestige. The decision holds the key to shaping the future of Texas A&M football.
