The cause of this was the infamous incident between Will Smith and Chris Rock. ‘The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air’ landed a ruthless slap on the stand-up comedian’s face, which left several attendees shocked to their cores. He let out his support and seemed to have forgiven the actor. As in the video, Will Smith realizes and says, “I know “I’m sorry” isn’t sufficient.” He also apologized to Rock’s mother.

Since the altercation, the Academy banned Smith from attending future Oscar events and other Academy award events for ten years.
