The Green Bay Packers shocked NFL fans and pundits alike when they went against pre-draft projections and draft a quarterback in the first round. 21-year-old Jordan Love was given a home at Lambeau Field. This was despite the team already having 36-year-old Aaron Rodgers who guided the team the NFC Championship game.

Fans were quick to draw similarities between Rodgers draft 15 years ago despite the team having 36-year-old Brett Favre on the books. Now, Favre who refused to mentor Rodgers till he left the team in 2008 has said, “Aaron’s job is not to mentor Jordan Love.”

Brett Favre made the comment on ESPN Radio’s Wilde and Tausch in Wisconsin. NFL analysts discussed his words while on ESPN’s Get Up. Former quarterback Dan Orlovsky highlights how technology had changed over the last decade and a half. As a result of this, he feels mentorship has changed too and says it’s up to Jordan Love to learn and pick Aaron Rodgers’ brains.

“Aaron Rodgers’s job is not going to be to mentor Jordan Love. It’s going to be Jordan Love’s job to be annoying and to be in Aaron Rodgers’s back pocket. It’s on the young player to push the envelope with how much the veteran is willing to share, but Aaron Rodgers does not need to go out of his way to get Jordan Love ready to play in 2023.”

“Their hope is that Rodgers can compartmentalize and Gutekunst has said ‘Rodgers is very focused on legacy stuff.’ Their thought is Rodgers is locked in enough on what’s in front of him that the fact of taking Jordan Love or what it means or how much longer he’s going to be there. It shouldn’t really affect that immediate business.”

Rodgers needs to manage the perspective of the team

Domonique Foxworth elaborated on an uncomfortable dynamic in the team affecting the entire locker room. He says it does filter through, but he can’t say how much it will affect the team.

“While Aaron Rodgers it’s not his job and maybe they should hire some other coach or some other former quarterback to come in and be Jordan Love’s mentor. It is his job to manage the perspective of the team and the emotions of the team and the expectations of the team which includes treating Jordan Love with respect and helping him out. And if there are some tensions, I’m sure everything can be solved.”
