NFL teams no longer lag behind when it comes to offering lucrative deals to their players. Over the years, the sports industry has seen the most momentous deals in the entire world, right out of a football field. League’s most dominant quarterback, Patrick Mahomes, was no exception with his $450 million dollar extension back in 2020. However, as time went by, even a deal of that size has now become relatively small in scale.

The 2X MVP now stands at 7th in terms of the annual pay of a quarterback, which dubs him one of the most underpaid quarterbacks in the league right now. And to anyone’s expectations, yet another star quarterback, Aaron Rodgers, has followed the Chiefs‘ man’s footsteps.

Rodgers now falls short when compared to Patrick Mahomes

Whether it’s a QB or a wide receiver, time and time again, an athlete has always taken a pay cut in order to see his team thrive. Mahomes has asserted the same, as did football GOAT, Tom Brady, and now Rodgers. Notably, this is not the first time the Jets’ star QB has taken a pay cut, but in this particular recent case, he paved the way for a potential extension of his time with the team.

Upon his arrival to the Big Apple, Rodgers was already due $58.3 million in guaranteed pay, which would have destroyed the team’s remaining chances to make a roster with a substantial and profound impact. However, the deal was shifted to the following season, which on one hand helped the team restructure the roster around their star QB, and on the other, left them a staggering $107.6 million hit for them to bear in the next season. As the 4x MVP plans to stay with the team, beyond the 2023 season, he has now agreed to take a $35 million pay cut in a reworked contract.

Rodgers’ new and restructured deal now guarantees $75 million in a two-year contract, easing the burden the team had to carry for the following seasons, as per the Guardian. The 2X MVP plans to conquer the AFC, and he chooses the long and safe path for doing so.

It couldn’t be just a one-year deal with the team’s significant changes

From the outset, it was clear that the 4x MVP’s move to the Jets was intended for the long haul. He took the first step by renegotiating his deal with the Packers to make the trade possible. Shortly after joining the team, the Jets spared no expense in bringing in players from all over the league, including some from Rodgers’ former team. Moreover, the star QB appears genuinely thrilled with the trade, joyfully embracing the new environment over the past few months. The OTAs went smoothly, and the uplifting news during training camps has also brought excitement to both the team and the fans.

Overall, these changes leave a positive impression, and there’s a good chance the Jets could end the NFL’s longest active postseason drought. The team’s last Super Bowl victory dates back to 1969, adding to the stakes on the table.
