In the weeks that followed Tom Brady’s divorce announcement, his ex-wife Gisele Bündchen wasn’t the most popular figure in the NFL world. Painted as the villain who didn’t want the seven-time Super Bowl champion to continue on his pursuit of greater success, the model was reduced to an obstacle in Brady’s path. Speculation concerning the reasons for their divorce pointed in the direction of Bündchen’s alleged unhappiness with Brady’s unwillingness to retire from the league.

However, months after their divorce, the QB announced his second and ‘final’ retirement. After more than a decade of being the NFL’s ‘it couple,’ the whirlwind of speculation was of a higher magnitude, unlike other issues within the NFL world. As two prominent figures in their respective careers, the spotlight on the former couple was brighter than ever. And that’s not the easiest to endure while juggling a turbulent situation. But months after their divorce, Gisele Bündchen finally opened up about the situation with her ex-husband. Here’s what she had to say.

Gisele Bündchen opened up to Vanity Fair in an extensive interview. The model dove into the events of the last few months, and shared her side of the story. The general narrative that unfortunately prevailed over all else was the assumption that the reason for the former couple’s split was Bündchen’s unhappiness with Brady’s career’s longevity.

In her Vanity Fair interview, the model emphasized that she was very hurt by the narratives that were being spun. Stating that there was much more to it and not just the black-and-white picture that was being painted, she spoke of reaching a point where the former couple wanted different things. She said, “When I was 26 years old and he was 29 years old, we met, we wanted a family, we wanted things together. As time goes by, we realize that we just wanted different things, and now we have a choice to make. That doesn’t mean you don’t love the person.”

Bündchen added, “It just means that in order for you to be authentic and truly live the life that you want to live, you have to have somebody who can meet you in the middle, right? It’s a dance. It’s a balance.” The former Victoria’s Secret Angel’s eye-opening side of the story answers the questions that have been plaguing the NFL world. But what does the future look like for the former couple?

The model’s interview also delved into making Miami a home base of sorts so that the couple’s children could be close to Brady. At present, the QB and model have taken paths of their own. Brady has taken a step back after a 23-year NFL career, and Bündchen has stepped back into the modeling world while embarking on pursuits that she’s passionate about.
