During the 1961 NFL title game, Lombardi approached Kennedy for a favor to grant leave to ‘the Golden Boy,’ who was in the military, and at that time the US was at its most crucial point in the Cold War.

President then granted star player Paul Hornung leave from military duty to play. Endorsed by Lombardi during the 1960 presidential election, Kennedy agreed and ensured Hornung’s availability. The favor paid off, as Hornung’s outstanding performance significantly contributed to Green Bay’s dominant 37-0 victory over the Giants.
