When Patrick Mahomes opened up about emulating Tom Brady

Back in 2018, in an interview, Patrick Mahomes revealed that he has been watching Brady‘s tapes since his college days. While watching those tapes, he picked up TB12’s tremendous ability to move in the pocket. “Just the way he can move within the pocket and still find lanes to throw the ball is something that I find is truly special,” Mahomes said.

“I mean, I try to do that, but I mean, you have to keep working on that. He’s done that his whole entire career, and it’s something that bought him a lot of extra time in the pocket to make a lot of great throws,” the Chiefs quarterback further said.

In that interview, Mahomes also revealed that his college coach, Kliff Kingsbury, was once a backup for Brady when the Patriots picked him in the draft in 2003. Kingsbury used to show Mahomes a lot of films of Brady and his pocket movements. Safe to say, Mahomes learned a lot from studying Brady and improved massively.

Later, Brady also praised the young Chiefs quarterback, as he said, “he’s obviously got a great skill-set and playing really well, throwing a lot of touchdowns, really distributing the ball and extending plays, making plays on the move, outside the pocket.”

Brady and Mahomes had a great rivalry so far

In the 2018-19 AFC Championship final, Brady crushed Mahomes’ and the Chiefs‘ dreams of winning the Super Bowl. Since then, both TB12 and Mahomes have developed a great rivalry on the field. In 2020, Brady joined the Bucs and in his very first season, he won the Super Bowl with them.
