Colts QB Anthony Richardson currently falls under the NFL concussion protocol. His status for the next game against the Ravens is in jeopardy. Richardson suffered a concussion in the second quarter versus the Texans, self-reporting symptoms to medical staff. 27 years old Gardner Minshew stepped in, securing victory.

For his return, Richardson must pass five concussion protocol steps: symptom-limited activity, aerobic exercise, football-specific exercise, non-contact practice, and full-contact practice. But what’s the latest on his condition?

According to the Indianapolis Star, Colts head coach Shane Steichen provided no updates, stating Richardson remains in the concussion protocol. It appears the rookie is “likely out” for the upcoming clash with the Baltimore Ravens in Week 3.

Richardson sustained the injury when Texans safety M.J. Stewart tackled him as he crossed the goal line for his second score, hitting the back of his head on the turf. Colts owner Jim Irsay commented after the game, “The first game, he banged up the knee, but it was OK, just a contusion. This game, banging the head. I think it’s just something where he’s got to protect himself.”

Since the Colts have not shared any progress or recovery updates – If Richardson can’t play, veteran backup Gardner Minshew is the likely starter, completing 19 of 23 passes for 171 yards and a touchdown against the Texans.

However, what is the NFL’s concussion protocol? A player undergoes a meticulous five-stage progression before returning to play.

In the NFL’s concussion protocol, a player undergoes a meticulous five-stage progression before returning to play. First, in the Symptom Limited Activity stage, they engage in light activities like stretching and team meetings, avoiding anything that worsens symptoms. If symptoms stay stable, they move to the second phase, Aerobic Exercise, using stationary biking or treadmill workouts to return to baseline.

The third stage brings Football Specific Exercise, conditioning, and strength training if no complications arise. The fourth stage introduces Club-Based Non-Contact Training Drills, including throwing, catching, and running. Finally, if symptoms stay clear and baseline returns, they reach Full Football Activity/Clearance. The team and independent consultants must agree on readiness before exiting the protocol for the next game.
