In what has turned out to be a season full of speculations and accusations, the off-season isn’t turning out any better for Russell Wilson. Usually, it was the Broncos Nations fanbase riding on him. However, things became worse this week when the Denver coaching staff expressed their frustration with the quarterback.

According to The Athletic’s conversations with around 15-20 Denver Broncos coaches, players and staff members, Wilson’s personal antics had a lot to do with the disastrous 5-12 season under first-year head coach Nathaniel Hackett. Most of the coaches maintained anonymity in order to speak candidly.

Wilson’s personal coaching staff was a big problem

When former Seattle Seahawks signal-caller, Russell Wilson rode into Broncos Country on a sweet $245 million four-year extension, he also had a few more demands left on the list. One of them was Jack Heaps, Wilson’s personal quarterback coach. Also, a personal nutritionist and a physical therapist, all stationed inside the Broncos facilities. This was a big deal for the new Broncos No 3. And it didn’t sit well with many from the coaching group.

No one else I have been around has ever been able to have those people in there, which, looking back on it, not a good idea,” one coaching staff from the 2022 season said.

Oh, and Nathaniel Hackett also arranged for a private office for Wilson on the second floor. And according to some players, the office was strictly meant for ‘football’ at all times. Russell always kept the TV playing NFL Network highlights, and the team even met there on the off days to watch opponent clips. However, a few coaches believed the decision to have an office on the second floor made little sense.

Russell Wilson didn’t expect the backlash for his open-door policy

The players were always on the first floor; they never really came up to the second floor. If you came up to the second floor as a player, it honestly wasn’t a good thing because you were probably getting released,” one coaching member said. And their angst multiplied when Wilson couldn’t produce on-field. The Broncos scored the fewest points in the league, with Wilson having the worst season of his 11-year career.

According to one offensive player, the former Super Bowl champion quarterback had an “open-door policy” in his office. And this practice irked some of the actual staff members. “So, are you a coach, or are you a player? Your open door should be you sitting at your locker,” one said.

Last week, it also came out that Wilson apparently tried to get former head coach Pete Carroll and his Seahawks GM fired to further his chance to win the Super Bowl. And the world knows how that agreement ended. So maybe, in this fresh journey for a Lombardi, Denver Russ should keep the coaches on his side.
