Baker Mayfield Gets His Own Statue at University of Oklahoma; Making Fans Go “WTF Did He Even Do to Deserve a Statue”

The Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield became one of the few players to get statued in Oklahoma. On Friday, the university bestowed this honor for winning the Heisman trophy in 2017.

However, the fans were in utter disbelief and confused at the same time. Because the statue failed to strike a resemblance with Mayfield. Today, the 26-year-old quarterback is finding a new home in the NFL after the Browns signed Deshaun Watson in a lucrative deal.

Fans react to Baker Mayfield getting statued in Oklahoma

Baker Mayfield’s Heisman Trophy-winning statue was revealed at the University of Oklahoma’s Everest Training Center on Friday. He became the 6th player in the history of his college to win the trophy and raise the Sooners in the record books of college football.

He passed for 4,627 yards and 43 touchdowns while leading Oklahoma to a Big 12 title and the College Football Playoff that campaign. After five years of his achievement, Oklahoma decided to honor Mayfield in a grand ceremony.

His professional career kick-started in 2018 after he was selected by the Cleveland Browns in that year’s draft. The statue was originally set to be revealed during the 2020 spring game, but it got delayed because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

As soon as the news went public, fans were quick to react. They pointed out the statue was not at all resemble Mayfield. While some resorted to criticizing his abilities. One Twitter user asked what he had done to get his statue.

Another user sarcastically commented that the statue is similar to the villain from the fast and furious.

A user by the name of Perry mentioned that Kyler Murray’s statue will be the next one on the line.

While another user commented taking a dig at Mayfield’s professional career.

One user said that Mayfield in the statue looks like Robert Patrick in Terminator 2.

One more user joined the discussion questioning Mayfield’s abilities.

At this point, Mayfield’s future in the NFL is quite unclear. The Browns are desperately finding a new landing spot for the veteran quarterback.

Mayfield’s salary cap is a big hindrance to his trade

One of the main reasons posing a barrier to the trade is Mayfield’s salary cap. He is expected to receive nearly $18 million annually this season, and no team is willing to hire at this salary. Moreover, the team is looking for a first-round pick in his exchange which is quite gloomy at this point.

There is no other option for the Browns than to trade Mayfield, otherwise, it would create a burden on their cap space. Recently, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport mentioned on the Pat McAfee Show that the Panthers were considered the “most likely” landing spot for Mayfield. It would be interesting to see how things change for the QB as the draft days are approaching soon.
