The disgruntled quarterback Baker Mayfield is on the verge of getting a new landing spot in the NFL. However, there are still uncertainties surrounding his salary cap. The quarterback is entering the fifth & final year of his rookie contract and is carrying a salary of $18.8 million. The figure isn’t pretty considering the Browns’ current scenario, who are going with former Texans QB Deshaun Watson in the upcoming season. However, there is a need for the Browns to offload Mayfield from the roster, and it seems they are willing to pay half of his salary to the Carolina Panthers, who have recently engaged in trade talks with the franchise.

Since the beginning of the 2022 off-season, it was all doomed for the Oklahoma alumnus. The NFL team’s pursuit for a much better QB in the form of Deshaun Watson invited all the unexpected jitters in Mayfield’s career and position on the roster.

So it becomes imperative for the Browns to choose the best among the two and release the other guy. With all the teams conducting the mandatory minicamps, the Browns are forced to strike a deal with other franchises.

Many teams came forward, but every time his salary hindered the developments in talks. But this time, Carolina Panthers have shown interest in the 27-year-old.

According to the recent updates pitched by NFL reporter Albert Breer, Cleveland is willing to pay around $9-10 million of Mayfield’s money to the Panthers if they go forward with the trade.

“They’re willing to take on a fair amount of Baker’s salary. Like nine, 10 million dollars.” Breer said on the Rich Eisen show, per a media outlet.

It also states that for those who believed that Mayfield was kept on hold as Watson’s insurance, this move happens to be a befitting reply. Moreover, if that was the case, the Browns wouldn’t be committing a major chunk of Mayfield’s salary to the Panthers.

In the current scenario, it is a win-win situation for both teams if the trade gets executed. One side is desperately in need of an impactful quarterback, while the other side is waiting for a team to offload its players.

Under the leadership of QBs Matt Caroll and Sam Darnold, the offensive unit seems pretty weak. However, with the inclusion of Mayfield, the franchise can strengthen its young offense in the upcoming season.

“There’s urgency on Carolina’s side to execute the deal soon so Mayfield can get some time in minicamp with the Panthers. For the Browns, it’s the best offer they have. Talks ongoing.” CBS sports’ Jonathan Jones said.
