After a stressful off-season drama, the former Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield has found a new landing spot in the Carolina Panthers. Even though Mayfield salvaged the Browns’ 18-year-old playoff drought in 2020, it seems the franchise wasn’t kind enough to handle the signal-caller who went in pursuit of Deshaun Watson earlier this year. To make salary cap adjustments, it was vital for the team to trade Mayfield, especially before the regular season begins. It seems Mayfield’s wife was more than happy hearing the decision and shared a message for the fans.

It was Mayfield’s third wedding anniversary, and the deal struck at a perfect moment. “Happy #3 to my partner in crime! It’s been a wild year of growth both individually and as a couple, and I wouldn’t trade it for the world. Love you!” his wife Emily wrote on Instagram. Similarly, she shared a story asking the Panthers fans to get ready and witness huge traffic of Midwestern fans.

All in all, the deal paved a new path for Mayfield to re-establish his worth in the NFL. The 27-year-old is entering the fifth and the final year of his rookie contract. That is when all the dramatic incidents took place.

According to the latest deal, the former Heisman Trophy winner will get a $10.5 million salary from the Browns and the remaining $4.86 million from his new team Carolina Panthers.

He was about to make nearly $18 million in 2022; however, Mayfield agreed to bear a $3.5 million pay cut in the upcoming season. He was traded to the Panthers in return for a conditional 5th-round draft pick, making the deal viable for both sides.

Baker Mayfield will get to avenge in the first week itself

The schedules for the upcoming season were already out, and the trade was executed a few days ago. It turns out Mayfield will face the Cleveland Browns in Week 1 itself. On September 11, the quarterback will be wearing a Panthers jersey and probably will play as a starter.

As of now, Sam Donald is still prioritized over Mayfield in the QB run. However, the competition is still intense and is hard to predict whether Matt Rhule will go after Mayfield or rely on Donald in the first few matches.

The Texas native was recruited as the No 1 overall pick from the 2018 draft class. During his four seasons with the franchise, Mayfield passed for 14,125 yards and registered 92 touchdowns. It will be interesting to see how much Mayfield flourishes under new management and manages to build a formidable side.
