While teams in the NFL are busy improving their roster for the upcoming season, Washington Commanders have their hands filled with other issues. They are on the verge of a change in ownership. Dan Snyder decided to sell the Commanders for $6 billion. Amidst interested buyers emerging to acquire the franchise from the hands of Snyder, they have one more issue to deal with. The team’s woes at the QB position are prevalent. They do, however, have second-year QB Sam Howell to fill the spot left after Carson Wentz’s dismal performance and Taylor Heinicke signing with Atlanta Falcons.

In a bid to find a veteran QB for the roster, the Commanders called every team to inquire about QB availability and cost last year. This has brought out a firm response from a billionaire owner in the NFL.

According to reports, the Washington Commanders had called every team in the NFL last year to discuss the possibility of their QB being available for trade. In this effort, they left no stone unturned. In a confident move, the Commanders also inquired about Kansas City Chiefs on the availability of their QB Patrick Mahomes, despite him signing a 10-year deal with the Chiefs.

After making a list of almost 40 QBs to inquire about availability, the franchise also tried its luck while reaching out to former retired Indianapolis Colts QB Andrew Luck. Luck has been out of the league since retiring in 2019. But it goes to show that the Commanders did not want to leave any stone unturned. This move recently brought out a response from Colts’ owner Jim Irsay, who stated that teams reaching out to retired Andrew Luck to play for their franchise clearly violates the league’s tampering policy.

While they might have been relentlessly on the hunt for a QB last year, the approach has changed now, as they put their faith in second-year QB Sam Howell to lead the team on the field.

Are Washington Commanders going all in with Howell?

Last year in his rookie season, Howell had to sit on the bench to learn the craft as Carson Wentz and Taylor Heinicke battled it out for the QB1 role. But Howell got his time in the spotlight with an impressive 26-6 win over the Dallas Cowboys in the regular season finale. Despite it being the only game as a starter for the young QB, the team believes that he is their guy for the future.

And they even made their intentions with Sam Howell more clear after they opted not to bring in more QBs during the 2023 Drafts. The only move in this position by the Commanders is bringing in 30-year-old veteran Jacoby Brissett to a one-year deal.
