The 2017 NFL season was a crucial year for the Dallas Cowboys and Deshaun Watson, as both were looking at a promising future. The franchise was banking on quarterback Dak Prescott as their future starter. On the other hand, Watson was looking to grab any opportunity to make a name for himself in the league and made an audacious attempt on one occasion.

Before the 2017 NFL Draft, some prospects were trying to grab the attention of their desired NFL franchises. It began with former Texas A&M Aggies DE Myles Garrett campaigning for the Dallas Cowboys to draft him in a video. As one of the top prospects in 2017, Watson was not letting any opportunity pass to cause more headaches for the Cowboys.

The former Clemson Tigers QB was in Fort Worth, Texas, to accept the Davey O’Brien Award when he saw Jason Garrett at the event. Waston goes on to joke, stating, “I like being in Fort Worth, Texas…And I told Coach Garrett that if I’m back here, you have to draft me.” It was a statement that evoked laughter from the audience, and with good reason.

Dak Prescott had just come off of a stunning rookie NFL season while earning the AP Rookie of The Year honor. Watson was only joking about asking about getting drafted by the Cowboys, with the chance of joining unlikely.

The franchise was working towards a future without legendary QB Tony Romo. Prescott was able to grab the opportunity with both hands by the end of the 2016 campaign.

While he wouldn’t get drafted as a Cowboy, Watson jokingly also asked the franchise to go a step further. He asked them to trade away their aging veteran in Romo and Prescott to acquire him.

However, things have completely changed for all parties involved. In 2022, Watson is now the Cleveland Browns QB, while Prescott has established himself after an impressive 2021 season. The new NFL season could pit both QBs against one other as they attempt to lead their teams to glory.
