The former DE turned sports analyst, JJ Watt, delves into the running back dilemma. Although the problem has been around for ages, it’s only this season it spread like wildfire throughout the league. Initially instigated by former RB, OJ Simpson himself, the league now has a huge problem at hand, even witnessing protests here and there. A crucial position that constantly falls victim to injury is currently being compensated less than the average pay of a kicker.

Whether it’s Saquon Barkley or Josh Jacobs, no one is safe from the impact, leaving the top-tier RBs either with a franchise tag or left out entirely from the roster. The former DE certainly had his thoughts about the said issue, while appearing in a recent interview.

As the host, Dan Patrick asks Watt’s viewpoint on the running back issue, the latter kicked off his take with, “It’s the best proof so far that business is the business,” then added why the owners are investing less and less on a running back. He claimed that it’s relatively easier to get a new player from the position compared to any other position on a roster. Furthermore, Watt claimed that the owners aren’t actually looking for a top-tier RB, but an athlete who can only hold the fort. He also mentioned that he played against several RBs who are worth every penny, but the current situation is out of their hands.

OJ locked his horns with the league for a good cause

Despite the former RB’s constant social media presence, it’s certainly rare for him to call out not one but two teams in the league. He specially mentioned the Browns and the Raiders, who currently put their star RB, Saquon and Jacobs in a franchise tag. Both of these athletes coveted a long-term deal with fair pay, however, the teams refused to entertain their requests. They were both slapped with franchise tags despite recording record-breaking stats last season.

Notably, several athletes from the position appeared on a Zoom call to discuss the current situation only a few days ago. It was reported that both Barkley and Jacobs were present at the meeting. It was organized by Chargers‘ RB, Austin Ekeler, who has been constantly vocal about the ongoing issue.
