Cam Newton was drafted by the Carolina Panthers in 2011. The Auburn graduate was the first pick in the 2011 NFL draft. He arrived in Carolina with great expectations. As luck would have it, Newton had a spectacular rookie season with the Panthers.

Newton broke the all-time NFL rookie record for passing and rushing yards in his first season itself. He was also the first rookie quarterback in NFL history to throw for 4,000+ yards, consequently breaking Steve Grogan’s 35-year old record.

Cam even went on to win the NFL MVP award in 2015.

He said, ‘Boy, you lead the league in catching for tight ends, you can still play’. He told me go ask around the league if anyone wants me and if they didn’t he asked me to come back,” Sharpe exclaimed.

The Former Baltimore Ravens TE further spoke about how Cam Newton gave his everything to the team throughout his tenure with the Panthers. But in the end, if a text message was all he got, should Newton have left the Panthers sooner?

“So Carolina basically told Cam, ‘We’re really, really done. With everything about you, with you. This is over’. They didn’t even have the decency to pick up the phone and call the man that gave them nine years of great service.

“He was the face of the franchise, no matter what you say. Cam gave them everything he had and in the end that might be the reason he’s not there.

“As you said, ‘He died for their cause’ without trying to spare himself. So yes, this was awful, awful!” Sharpe concluded.
