Back in 2015, Jameis Winston was one of the most exciting prospects to arrive in the NFL. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers selected him as the 1st overall pick that year. He signed a four-year, $23.35 million contract with the Buccaneers, with a $16.7 million signing bonus.

The former Florida State quarterback was living the dream in Tampa Bay. However, the expectations surrounding his arrival did not meet the final output from his displays. The promising starlet ended his tenure with the Buccaneers on a dismal note.

Winston had a 28-42 record as a starter in Tampa Bay. He threw for 19,737 yards with 88 passing TDs against 71 interceptions during his 5-year stay in Florida. He signed for NFC South rivals, New Orleans Saints, last year and will now compete for a starting berth this year against Taysom Hill.

Jameis Winston tipped for a bright future by former Buccaneers teammate

Speaking to Kyle Brandt on The Ringer Podcast earlier this week, Tampa Bay Buccaneers WR Chris Godwin had something interesting to say about his former teammate, Jameis Winston.

He said, “It just has to come down to decision making, you know? He has all the things that you want in a quarterback you know, he has the arm talent for sure to make all the plays you need to make. It’s just not being too much of a gunslinger and not taking too many unnecessary risks….It seems like this past year has been good for him in terms of his development.”

“I think he’s stepping into a really good situation, he’s got a good offense, great skill players around him. I’m not looking for him to do anything great with respect to the Super Bowl (chuckles) because you know, he’s in our division,” Winston said on the podcast.

It’s no secret that the Saints need some firepower at quarterback. The retirement of Drew Brees signalled the end of an era in New Orleans. HC Sean Payton is considering both Winston and RB/QB Taysom Hill for the starter’s job.

As per reports earlier this year, Russell Wilson was also being considered in a possible trade deal. But that idea has died down in recent months. This could be the year that Winston truly establishes himself as a top-choice quarterback.
