The fans thought this might be it when the Washington Commanders put everything they had; when they went into obtaining Carson Wentz from the Indianapolis Colts. That may not be the case, as Commanders drafted Sam Howell for what seemed like an eternity. However, for Wentz, the new QB prospect could be a major threat, and the NFL Draft expert explains the probable reasons.
Washington snatched Sam Howell up at the right time, and he now has a shelter. While most people projected him to become a Friday selection, they viewed him as a possible No. 1 pick. Despite this, it only took a few moments for Howell to be thrust into the franchise’s quarterback quandary.

The 2022 NFL Draft in Las Vegas has been quite a ride for a top-level quarterback prospect like UNC prospect Sam Howell. But luck went into his side when the Washington Commanders took a leap of faith, bringing him in as the 144th pick in the 5th round. After the opening draft pick went public, noted NFL Draft analyst Daniel Jeremiah reveals his opinion on the new Commander’s QB, and why he is a potential starter.
Why Was Nakobe Dean, Who Happens to Be the Best LB Prospect in This Year’s Draft Selected So Late?
He mentions, “I think this is a QB that’s capable of getting on the field and being competitive right now. I’m shocked he’s here in the fifth round.”

Daniel Jeremiah said in another Twitter post that stuff like this will only add to the Howell Histrionics.
Sam Howell has the best 3rd and 7+ reel of any QB in this draft class. I'm shocked he fell to the 5th round. If Wentz starts to slip, I think he'll be ready to play.

The Commanders’ selection of Howell makes complete sense, but everyone is now guessing over Carson Wentz’s reaction towards the move. The franchise can move Howell forward gently and without putting too much emphasis on him to acquire it straight away at No. 144, which would be the realm of developmental talents (particularly as a signal-caller). And besides, he was the position’s sixth player to leave.
Is Howell the future Washington Commanders QB1?
Howell has a height of 6’0″ and a weight of 220 pounds. He is a top-100 overall recruit in 2019 as a dual-threat quarterback. Howell kept putting up strong numbers in his first year in North Carolina. He glanced like a prospective first-round pick from the moment he came on the field, flinging for 3,641 yards and 38 touchdowns against only seven interceptions, earning him the ACC Rookie of the Year award.
