For fans of Bears legend Steve McMichael, significant news has emerged. Known as ‘Mongo’ among Da Bears faithful, the veteran was recently hospitalized due to sepsis and pneumonia, further complicating his already bedridden state. With 15 years in the league, 13 of which were devoted to the Chicago Bears, McMichael played a pivotal role in the team’s 1985 Super Bowl victory, securing two All-Pro selections during his tenure.

The 65-year-old, affectionately called “Ming The Merciless,” holds the franchise record for an impressive 191 consecutive games played from 1981 to 1993, ranking second in the team’s all-time sack list. However, the once-dazzling star of the field now finds himself confined to a bed, battling for his life.

Steve McMichael feels the power of prayer

In a recent heartening update, the NFL veteran’s family has stepped forward to inform fans of McMichael’s improving health. An NFL tweet also carries a message regarding his progress, stating, “Steve McMichael’s health continues to improve as he recovers from sepsis and pneumonia. He does not have sepsis any longer and remains on IV antibiotics for pneumonia.”

It further adds, “We expect him to be released from ICU and return home in the coming days.” At his hospital bedside, Mongo’s wife, Misty, communicated that he will remain in the ICU for a few more days for IV antibiotics to combat the infection. She went on to mention that McMichael is undergoing treatment for residual fluid in his lungs.

Following his hospitalization on Thursday, an outpouring of well-wishes from over 100 million Bears fans is propelling their prayers for the already-bedridden NFL star player’s swift recovery. While he is recovering from this latest medical emergency, he has been fighting the biggest battle of his life for the past three years.

The hardships of the legend

The 65-year-old, who has been courageously battling ALS for the past three years, is facing the inability to speak or even feed himself. In 2021, he consulted a neurosurgeon who conveyed the diagnosis of ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), a condition characterized by the breakdown of nerve cells, resulting in reduced muscle functionality and impaired grip strength. Consequently, Steve McMichael finds himself confined to a bed.

Adding to the complexity of his medical journey, a few days ago, an unforeseen development arose. According to Misty McMichael, her husband entered a coma on Thursday night. Admitted in an unconscious state, the defensive lineman underwent treatment with two IV antibiotics to address pneumonia and sepsis. However, as of Saturday, culture tests indicate the sepsis has subsided, though he continues to confront pneumonia.

But with an imminent release from the hospital, McMichael may soon embrace an opportunity to celebrate a new phase of his life, potentially marked by a Hall of Fame induction. He was recently named among the 12 candidates being deliberated for entry into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
