The penultimate date in the month of August was crucial in the buildup to the upcoming NFL season. With the final 53 in the minds of the franchises, the teams figure out their final roster by waiving and cutting players for the 2023 campaign. Kansas City Chiefs were no different than the other 31 teams in the league, except in one instance. While many of the teams have waived and cut players who were prospects and potential stand-ins for the regular starters, the Chiefs had to refrain from reporting one player.

In what was the story of the offseason for the Chiefs, Chris Jones’s holdout has continued to persist even with the season starting in less than 2 weeks. But the latest update from the GM of the KC Chiefs might help in shedding new light on the situation.

Kansas City Chiefs GM speaks about their DT

The Jones and Chiefs stand-off has been the elephant in the room for the entire franchise ever since the middle of June. Back in the height of the offseason training, the DT refused to show up for the OTA in lieu of the contract negotiations. While many expected the holdout to end sooner than later, few could have imagined the situation to drag on for as long as it has. As the Chiefs prepare for their first game of the season against the Detroit Lions, Brett Veach has an update for the fans.

In a recent article published by Chiefs Wire, the GM of KC Chiefs, Brett Veach, put forward a significant update on the DT. While speaking to the reporters on a Zoom conference, Veach says, “We have been in communication.” He further adds, “….just the last few days, we’ve been in more communication. So we’re gonna continue to press on and work hard……It’s been obviously well stated how we feel about Chris, and he feels the same way. So again, we’re just going to keep working on this thing. We’re looking forward to next Thursday, and hopefully, he’s in the lineup and ready to go.”

Although the words are encouraging and positive, the situation is far from attaining a resolution. While many might wonder if Jones is worthy of the money he seems to be demanding, they only need to look at the numbers from last season to come to a conclusion.

Chris Jones put up his best numbers in 2022

The DT has been with the Chiefs ever since he first stepped into the NFL. Since signing for Kansas City back in 2016, the DT has shown steady and impressive progress over the years. This ultimately culminated in the numbers he put up last season. After starting every single game from the regular season for the first time in his career in 2022, he’d go one step further. Matching the 17/17 record, the DT recorded 44 tackles for the Chiefs, alongside 15 sacks.

While the numbers at first glance may not seem impressive to some, his presence on the pitch was crucial for the Chiefs winning the SB. Alongside the likes of QB Patrick Mahomes, TE Travis Kelce, DT Chris Jones was the face of the SB-winning team from 2022.

The update from the Chiefs will ease the fans’ concerns, but the executives have to act fast. In light of the last couple of months and the standoff, both parties will hope for a quick resolution.
