Former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick is an NFL free agent and recently received a special honor from his former NFL head coach. Kaepernick will be the honorary captain for the Michigan Wolverines’ Maize and Blue spring game. On Wednesday, the news broke out on the school’s Twitter with some photos with the team and a rather familiar face.

The familiar face was the current Wolverines coach Jim Harbaugh, who as Kaepernick’s coach started him during his stint with the Niners franchise. After coaching him for four seasons from the 2011 season through to the 2014 campaign, Harbaugh did leave for taking over at Michigan in 2015.

It was under Harbaugh that Kaepernick hit his stride, as he led the Niners to the Super Bowl following the 2012 season.

It was the Wolverines’ coach who took a chance on him by benching QB Alex Smith in 2012. He did recognize an up-and-coming QB in Colin Kaepernick and gave him the starting job. Despite not having any direct ties with Michigan, the former Niners QB was receiving support from Harbaugh. While College football spring games are more about celebrations than actual football, honorary captains are an important part of them. Kaepernick will be happy to receive a special endorsement from the Wolverines.

How good was Colin Kaepernick in college?

Kaepernick did play college football in Nevada. He ended up throwing for 10,098 yards and rushing for 4,112 yards. He ended up recording 82 TDs while rushing for 59 scores. While being out of the NFL, he was also honored by his alma mater as one of the inductions into the 2020 and 2021 Wolf Pack Hall of Fame.

The induction was received by Kaepernick while being cheered by the 23,965 fans within the Mackay Stadium. While his achievements didn’t stagnate at the collegiate level, he hit some heights after breaking out in the league.

He ended up recording 12,271 passing yards, 72 passing TDs, and 30 INTs during his NFL career. While the highlight of his time with the Niners remains his lone Super Bowl XLVII in New Orleans. Kaepernick continues to be a player waiting in the wings despite interest from some of the NFL teams. He is one of the remaining talented free agents without a team before the 2022 NFL campaign.
