Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones Was Once Inches Closer To Buy This AFC West Franchise For $5.8 Million: “I Was Trying to Figure Out How to Get It Done. With No Money”

Jerry Jones bought the Dallas Cowboys in 1989 for a whopping $140 million. Back then, it was seen as a very expensive purchase and a bad business decision for Jones. It turned out to be the best business decision for the man, as the Cowboys are now the most valuable sports franchise in the world.

However, all of that was very close to not happening. Prior to buying the Cowboys, Jones was interested in purchasing a different football team. Back in 1966, Jerry Jones was very close to buying the Chargers franchise.

Jerry Jones didn’t have the money required to buy the franchise and sought the help of Jimmy Hoffa’s union. Talking about it the meeting with Hoffa’s union, the Cowboys owner, said, “I was sitting with them, going over my dreams, when I said, ‘Where I really wanna be is in football.’ And they said, ‘Well, you know, our union might want to be involved in sports.'”

The deal was very close to happening as Jones was able to buy the Chargers from hotel magnate Barron Hilton for a price of $5.8 million. The deal fell off later. Jones’ father urged him not to buy the franchise, and it turned out to be the best decision ever. 23 years later, the billionaire owner bought the Dallas Cowboys.

As stated earlier, many ridiculed Jerry Jones’s decision to purchase the Dallas Cowboys for $140 million in 1989. Now that same franchise is the most valuable sports franchise in the world. It is currently valued at $7.64 billion.

The Cowboys are worth $630 million more than the second-placed sports franchise, the New York Yankees. Despite the NFL not being that popular in many countries, the Cowboys have done well in the market.
