It is not uncommon for rising NFL stars to desire hefty contracts and stable financial futures. Due to exceptional quarterbacks like Patrick Mahomes, the league has recently seen enormous hikes. Mahomes signed to the Kansas City Chiefs in 2020, agreeing to an unprecedented 10-year deal extension valued $503 million with guarantee “mechanisms” worth $477 million in total. It is no surprise that this groundbreaking contract has set a new standard for future contract conversations in the NFL.

New York Giants QB Daniel Jones has recently caught the attention of fans and analysts alike. Dubbed “Eli Manning’s successor,” the young quarterback has reportedly sought a confounding deal of $47 million per year. Jones has dominated the headlines, drawing comparisons to the staggering contract of Patrick Mahomes.

Craig Carton, a well-known NFL analyst, recently took an unpredicted stance on Fox Sports’ The Carton show. Craig stated, “Daniel Jones is arguably the best rushing QB in the NFL.” He further added Jones did a commendable job for the Giants last season, and his rushing statistics saw a much-needed uptick as he racked up 708 yards in the team’s 16 games.

By becoming the first player to accumulate 200 passing yards and 100 rushing yards, Daniel made history for the Giants. He was also voted for the NFC offensive player of the week. However, Giants’ negotiation with Jones has proved to be extremely difficult. He eventually settled for a $40 million per year extension after making an overwhelming demand for $47 million initially. Although Carton’s opinion has raised many eyebrows, there’s always plenty of debate over which team possesses the league’s top quarterback.

Giants QB approached this offseason with the intention of grabbing a long-term agreement with the franchise. Jones did exactly that when he agreed to a four-year, $160 million deal with $82 million in guarantees and an additional $35 million in incentives. In terms of average income, Jones would have moved up to the fifth-highest position among NFL quarterbacks. Instead, he is $12 million below Lamar Jackson of the Baltimore Ravens, who is the highest-paid quarterback in the NFL.

Under the direction of first-year head coach Brian Daboll, Jones 26, had a breakthrough season in 2022. For the first time since 2016, Jones guided New York to a winning record (9-7-1) and a playoff appearance. He demonstrated his dual-threat potential by adding 708 yards and seven touchdowns on the run. After several offseason additions, the Giants’ offense is anticipated to look somewhat different in 2023 than it did in 2022. The Giants signed free agent receivers Parris Campbell and Jamison Crowder and acquired star tight end Darren Waller from the Las Vegas Raiders. And Jones spent last months’s mandate camp getting to know his new weapons. This shows that Jones is excited to work with the new players and channel the team with a new potential for the upcoming season.
